This diverted them, nnd after finishing
the liquor orre nfter another snnk into
a drunken slumber.
It was midnight. Every member of
the band was asleep save the man who
was deputed to guard me. He was sitting on a piece of firewood, so placed
that he could watch mo ncross tho
flame. I lay on my bnck looking up at
the stars and featherlike clouds thnt
now and again floated ncross the great
blue dome, the only motion apparent
save the tree tops bending under an occasional breeze. The fire flickered, the
guard nodded, nnd an owl in the distance gave an occasional hoot;
I heard something stir In the tindery
brush. Glancing aside, \ saw n small
light disk pver a bush. W was tUe face
pf little Puck. , ', ....
Now, In tho uame of nil the gods, will
those devoted friends never give over
risking Jlieir lives In these useless attempts? What is to happen now? I
scowled an order to the boy to go
away, but he paid no attention to It.
Something came sliding along the
ground and lodged ognlnst me. The
guard heard It, started, cast a quick
glance nt me, then about him, but,
seeing nothing) relapsed Into his former quietude. I felt for what had
struck mo and clasped a Jnckknlfe.
Meanwhile Buck disappeared, but,
soou appearing again In his place, held
up a carbiuc. lie had doubtless stoleq
it from one of {he tiien, tyIio slept op

Again he disappeared, and I watched
eagerly for his return. The guard was
still awake, though nodding, but had
he been moro watchful ho would not
likely have discovered Buck, for tbe
underbrush, both where the boy appeared to me and where It skirted the
sleeping guerrillas, was so thick that
in -passing around. t"p capip he was
comparatively safe from observation,
Resjdcs for rpost of the distance Buck
traversed dn his gun foray the guard's
back was toward him.
I watch the point where Buck's head
appeared, expecting to see It again,
but in its stead presently see two whit*
points. Straining my eyes, I discern
the whites of two eyes, then a' black

Itjs Ginger. A white line .appeio'

olapse. Ginger holds li).? ground. Has
ho gone to sloop? No. Another five
minutes,'iind he holds up another gun.
Ah. 1 see, Kittle Buck, with catlike
tread. Is gathering in the iirtns. That's
well. He Is far hotter lilted for such
delicate work than a stiff old negro.
The lii||e pantomime begins to take
shape In my mind and bring anticipations of moro thrin a light for my own
life. If I can escape and Ituck nnd
Ginger secure sulllclent arms, It may
he possible for all our parly to get together and make a defense. I must
tell Ginger to get some niiiiiiiinltion.
