The balance-sheet for the operations of the water < and vlight"sincc taken over by tbc city has been completed and shows what a remarkably valuable franchise this is to the city. Since thc council took it over on October 1st it bus earned a lcvcnuc of $5,305.Sfi, operating expenses and salaries avere $191)5.00 leaving a net profit'to the city of $3,400.77 or at the rate ,of $l,L33.55 per month, and in addition the city has lh free lighting of the streets and public buildings for which a large amount was paid monthly to (ho company. Tlie u.-e of tho light has also lii'gely incn used under civie ownership, till the city has a larger revenue than the company bad, and this in spite of lbe fact ibat the price was ieduced lo large consumers. Those results fully justify the policy of lhc mayor and aldermen and explain the stubborn manner in which certain niembeis of the company fought against the sale of the property to tlie city. Tlie only unsatisfactory feature of tbc biibiiica-sbeel from a consumers point of view is the profit of $119.58 on installation. This branch of the work should be done at cost lo encourage tbc use of the light, and the mayoi and aldermen ecpicssod themselves in favor of this policy when considering thc balance-sheet on Thursday night iJ.
