The Judge took the hint. He  swore in special constables, had the  claim-jumper arrested, and as  there was no prison, the culprit  was chained to a tree. Nice legal  points as to title were not .wailed  for in ihosc days. The Judge  simply got a boat and shipped ihe  claim-jumper out of the ��������� camp in  charge of the -special constables  and peace again reigned. As a record of those days is of  interest and well worth preserving,  1 give the following statement fdr  which I urn indebted to one of the  pioneers of these "early years of the  Big Bend j   ���������  " In the. early part of April, 13G5.  a prospecting party'started from  iia reus, Colville, Wash. The party  consisted of  two  boats,  Nels  Dc-  ations was that H. C. Carnes ancl  party had $9000 in gold, which they  had'taken from Carnes Creek, Nels  Demars and party had ������18,000  which they had taken from French  Creek, and lhe party which worked  Goldstream had $2,000. Nels Demars  and another of the party were told  off for ihe work, and thov hired  two Indians to assist. Demars got  two hand sleighs, a quantity of  supplies for thu"trip, and the search  party started from Marcus in a  canoe on their perilous-trip. 'I hey  had a hard lime having to pole or  use the tow line, and through'slush  and ice. At what is now Kotaon,  solid icc( was encountered, and the.  canou had to be abandoned. Demurs, vent the' two Indians back to  Colville on a raft, loaded his hand  sleighs, and started up the river,  with his companion-. Camp  was made for tlie night.  An enthusiastic crowd of curlers  'attended the meeting in No. 2 , lire  hall on Monday evening. President  McCarter occupied the chair.  The canvassing committee reported a large' addition of new  members, membership of the club  having now passed the 40 mark. ��������� ���������  Tho committee appointed to  interview the rink management  reported that satisfactory terms  could be arranged and the committee were authorized to enter  into an agreement with "tho Rink  Company accordingly.  , The following skips were elected  for tho ensuing season: G. They washed a couple of pans  below the canyon and obtained a  pretty fair prospect. We made good time on  the way down, purchased supplies  to the value of $850, and returned  to Carnes Creek, reaching there on  July 6ih. The rest of .the party  had' meantime put in their time at  the diggings,so those of us who had  been down south started up the  ] river with the boat to prospect the  country further. /. At Goldstream  we camped two days. Here we got  some coarse gold but were no'tsiitis*'  tied witli it, so decided to go further  on.
