THE KOOTENAY MAIL. SANDON DESCRIBED. First Impressions of. a Visitor to the ' Sunless City. Enrroi! Kootenay Mail: Deiir sir,- 1 suppose you have been wondering' whaL has become of those items ] promised to send you from iSandon some time ago. The truth is, J have been kept pretty busy one way or another and have been putting it oh'; but 1 shall try lo send you a few notes now befoic school opens-.', , ' The fii>L thought to strike me on ariiving heie was, "What a dangerous looking place for snowslides!" Sandon is sin rounded on every side hy gige.ntic mountains which slope right to the town. If any .slides should coini; down I should like io be on a visit to Revelstoke or somewhere eke about that. time. However, ] anrtold there is no danger. Butafter lhe timber has been cleared oil' lhe mountain side*, then look out. for slides. At fir.-t I did not ta'ke. very'kindly to Sandon but now that I haverbeen here a few months and found out some of its advantage's J ' like it a cloud deal bett;'r. Sandon is a very busy,, little town when the mines are working' yes, and when they are not working too. More or, less .building ,has been going on all s-umtner. A new concentrator K fast .reaching 'completion; .a Preshyleiiah church is building; some new hou--es have been built; new sidewalks have been constructed, on the north hilkide," and the wagon road greatly impi oved; and a 'new flume is being made. The sound of blasting is heard every day. So there has been nunc work goingJon here all, winter than in any place) I know of. I was much pleased..on coming here, 1 with tht' appearance of Reco. avenueo the huMiiess street... It has quite a citified look. Tlu'i'e are quite a number of good .--tores and shops of different kinds;,some of them have quite tine fronts.. There aie a good' number of hotels: the Reco<is the finest and would-do credit to any town; it, is inn on the European plan. The,, streets, shops etc. are'jigliled with, electricity and are quite city like, at night especially;. It is a pretty sight to see the town fiom the hillsides at night. S.indon'is not very big, but what there is uf it is well mp to date. It has'a splendid water supply and good tire protection. The hydrants can send a jet,of water over the highest buildings.- Besides t he Uvo s.t.t ects.in the business part of the town there is a terrace of houses along each of the hillsides on the north and south, and in' time, no 'doubt, these .terraces'will We" greatly improved... A great improvement has .taken place- in life, appearance of Sandon even during the, hist three months. 'I have no doubt that"' as wealth increases Sandon will be' made.; into a very fine little town. Gertainly it never can become very' huge for there is not'room enough. Weie there a good townsite Sandon would he a town oko.OOO or li.OtlO people without doubt, I have spent .most of my vacation heie aud prefer it to any place I have months. We seeif'toiimv summer have no magnificent lakes as at New- Denver or Kaslo, and one sometimes become? tirod,,of being shut in by the mountains, but it is the coolest and ])leasante-"t place I know of to spend the ummt'i in. Then; are no mos- quitoes and "few flies. Cool breezes blow continually down lhe 0gi'eat .tiivines, thai open on the town, and . keep lhe atnio.-phei a cool. Then two mountain rivers come, .foaming and rushing down the ravines into the town; they unite and then flow the whole length of the town. 'These are fed from the glaciers and snow masses on the mountains and cool the air all around them. , One' cannot slay long in Sandon without climbing the mountains and visiting the mines. Being fond of geology and b.itany, I have- done, my shaieof climbing. The sights are very gianil. One day I went with a party to visit one of the prospective mines. There were eight of us; most of the others were shareholders and prospectors.' ' The president and secretin y of the company were in the party. We climbed about three miles, and some of it was pretty steep and hard. We reached the topof oneof lhe mountains, and it was not very wide. Some of them run up to u sharp ridge and it would not he very pleasant to slip oil'. , I'was afraid to climb where some of the parly went. A false step, a slip, and probably your heirs would lejoice in yotir life insurance that is, if you had never done any good otherwise. Half the party climbed up to the ledge and the rest ot us as far as safe. The ledge is said lo he a very good one. The company sunk a shaft to test it nnd now they are driving a tunnel to tap the ledtf'" farther dowlti This has been driven over -IjO feet at a cost of. over $0,01)0. I believe. They have bein obliged to suspend operations till more funds are on hand. Tile probabilities are that the lt'dyfc will be reached in JO') ft. more. What then:-' Well, if they .strike it, and it is anything like as good as surface indications' fihow, there will be fortunes made without a doubt, Shares are live cents at present, and if they succeed, stock will jump to piuuubly ij;l a, share at the len=t. Some call this gambling. I had no id.'a until coming heie that Sandon was .-o -important a mining ce'ntie. One sees a great deal about Rosland and other ' places, but not much about Sandon, aud yet it has paid enoi mous dividends. l)ui ing the last fopr yeais the mines around here have paid nearly three and a half million dollars. Sandon has never been boomed, I believe, and probablv that is the reason it is not so we-11 known. .Miners who'have been at *ome of the best silvr mines in the v.-nrld, say there, is a great future'in store i'or it. The O. P. R. broke up the last town I lived in by removing their shops, and scattered the inhabitants to the font- winds; but I think they will not be able to bieak up Sandon-not while the silver lasts, at least. It has been rainy all this week, but this keeps the weather cool. It has been cool enough at' times almost to piit on a little fire. .Sandon ir> very high (3,100 ft.)-neaily 1000 ft.'higuc-r than Donald, so that when it is cloudy and rainy the atmosphere, becomes very cool. - ' The, Presbyterian church is nearing completion,' and will he quite ;ln addition to the town. It is on the north hill side and will be yei y conspicuous. I believe it is to be a very line one when finished. The Methodist church is on tlie same side hut'higher up. No one in Sandon will be. aide to plead a.i an excuse for not attending chinch that he did not know where to go. ,, Western mining camps as a rule have the name of not being over fond of religion and churches, but I am sure that'a visitor in riving here would be favorably ynpressed on seeing that two of the finest and most conspicuous buildings in the town are churches. i ' T. Some of Ontario's shrewdest investors have subscribed. Several thousand dollars' woifhor work will be done on the Silver' Queen during the coming fall and winter.
