Bldgs., Ottawa���������The commission  of architects appointed by tlie government to direct the preparations of designs for tho new departmental buildings at Ottawa has just submitted Its  report outlining the conditions of tho  competition.  It will be open to competitors throughout the British Empire. There will be  at least two buildings and probably a  third one for tlie courts. Half a million  superficial feet of door space will have  to be provided.  Designs of a general character "will  first be submitted and from this number  the best six will be selected and the authors of these will be asked to elaborate  their designs. The one finally selected  will get, the job of superintending the  work based on -his plans and will" be  given a five per cent commission. The  cost of the buildings will probably aggregate five million dollars.  The other five competitors who will  be asked to develop their general designs  will each receive $3,000. The sketches  will be received up to January, 2 next.  Then three months will .be given for the  best half dozen to develop their plans.  The competitors whose plans are accepted will be given a further period of  four months to prepare working plans.  Afterward tenders will be called for,  but, in view of the time allowance, this  will  not  be  before  next autumn.  The cost of the building will aggregate $5,000,000 dollars. The other five  competitors will be asked to develop  their general designs and cacli will receive $3,000.' The sketches will be received up to January 2, next.
