The original scheme of Thomas XV.  MavVson, providing for the Coal Harbor  causeway, ^r, viaduct, has been approved  by "the" Dominion govt, engineers, but fit  is not certain whether these plans will  be used or new plans prepared by City  engineer' Eellowes upon which to~ undertake actual -.construction.  This viaduct'will cost well over $100,-  ooo. *   ' - "���������  LIBRARY RECEIVES NEW  BOOK ON ARCHITECTURE  Architects, decollators and art loveis  generally are invited by the librarian  of the Carnegie Public Library to examine a magnificent work which' has just  come to hand. It ib Owen Jones'. "Plans,  Elevations, Sections and Details of the  Alhambra." The studies of the beautiful Moorish palace occupied Jones for  tho greater part of eleven years, and  finally he was compelled to dispose of  his Welsh inheritance to provide the  means to publish tlie results of all this  labor. Bldg-s., Ottawa���������The commission  of architects appointed by the government to direct the preparations of_ designs for the new, departmental buildings at Ottawa has just submitted its  report outlining the v conditions .of the  competition.  It will be open to competitors throughout the British Empire. .There -yvill be  at least two' buildings and probably a  third one for the courts. , Half a .-million,  superficial feet of floor space will have  to be provided.  -' ''  Designs , of a general character will  first be submitted; and from this number  the best-six-will be~ selected and the authors of these will_be asked to .-elaborate  their designs.- The .one" finally selected  will get the job of superintending the  work based on his plans and will be  given a five per cent commission. The  cost of the buildings cWlll probably, aggregate five million dollars. -.    -  The other five competitors who,-will  be asked to develop their general designs  will each receive $3,000. The sketches  will be received - up to April 2 ^ next-  Then three months will be given.for the  best half dozen to develop their plans."
