WILL AWARD CONTRACT  FOR VICTORIA JAIL  Jail, Victoria���������At a meeting of the  Victoria Council to be held early this  week the contract for the proposed  Victoria Jail will be awarded., The  tenders are now in the hands of the  Jail committee, the building inspector and the purchasing agent, who will  submit their report on the bids. C. W.  Carkeek of Victoria was low tenderer  at $52,823.  Tenders for the iron work, electrical  installation, ventilating plant etc., will  be   considered   and   contracts  award-  Plans were drawn by Archt. J. C. M.  Keith and the estimated cost of the  bldg. is $70,000.  SAANICH  RATEPAYERS VOTE  $800,000   MONEY   BY-LAWS  Municipal Works, Saanich ��������� The  Saanich ratepayers voted on the $800,-  000 money by-law on Saturday, but  the result of the vote has not yet been  announced. v  The three by-laws voted on provide  for the raising of $450,000 for grading  and paving of various streets within  the municipality; $375,000 for a water  works distribution system, and $50,-  000. for scliool purposes. N. By. Co. asked to be relieved of  tha order-in-council passed to build  the bridge.  This was refused by the council  and the matter at present is in the  hands of the commissioners.  Erecting Fair Building.  Fair Bldg., Grand Forks, B. C.���������The  new fair bldg. for the Grand Forks  Exhibition Association is now being  rushed to house the approaching agricultural fair which is scheduled for  Sept. 29th.  INVITES TENDERS FOR  PORT TOWNSEND CANAL  Canal, Port Townsend, Wn.���������Plans  have been completed by the U. S. engineers, Burke Bldg., Seattle, for the  proposed 4,800 ft. canal to connect  Oak Bay and Port Townsend Bay and  tenders will be received until October  16th.  The project also calls for two jetties, each 600 feet long, of creosoted  piling, brush and stone.  There will be a 2,000 foot bulkhead. The canal will be 75 feet wide  at the bottom and 15 feet deep at  mean low water and will call for the  removal of about 255,000 cubic yards  of material.  The work will cost $62,500.  SUBMITS REPORT ON  TRUNK SEWER SYSTEM  Trunk Sewers, Vancouver���������Chairman F- Bowser of the Vancouver &  District Joint Sewerage & Drainage  .Board stated that by the end of the  year"ab"out"$S00,000" will" have'been  spent on trunk sewers.  The China Creek system will cost  about $273,000 when finished, in a  few weeks; the Central Park extensions will cost about $325,000; the!  deepening of the Brunette River  .channel, $100,000, and the Balaclava  sewer to be started in about two  weeks, $150,000. Sewers, Vancouver���������At a meeting  of the civic finance committee it was  suggested that the proposed sewer  work in Ward S be laid over until  next year owing to the lateness of the  season. $24,000 was recently appropriated towards this work. ARCHITECTS   INVITED TO  INTERNATIONAL   COMPETITION  Melbourne, June 30. 1914���������The Australian government announces an in.  ternatibnal architectural competition  for the purpose of selecting the architect of the Parliament House and pos:  sibly incidentally additional architect  for other, government structures of the  new Federal Capital City, Canberra.  Only tentative outline sketch designs for the building are requested,  and eight (8) prizes are offered aggregating ������6000, the first being ������2000,:  in addition to commission for service  at the scale of the ���������' Royal Institute of  British Architects.  Designs may be submitted in either  Melbourne or London before March 31,  1915, and wil be judged by the following jury of architects:  George T. Poole of Australia.  ^John J. Burnet of London. C.���������The Library Committee submitted a report  dealing with the question of a $50,000  Carnegie grant for a public library in  Nanaimo, the report being received  and filed and the Joint Council and  Board Committee requested to bring  the matter of a public library before  the city council with the request that  the Council submit'1 a bylaw to the  ate-payers.  Power Plant, Edmonton���������Messrs.  Sanderson & Porter, of New York, financiers and builders of hydro electric  plants recently, made a proposal to  the city of: Edmonton to furnish the  city with electric power. The proprosed  plant would be erected at Moose River,  B. C, in the Yellowstone Pass of the  Rockies. Its minimum capacity would  be 300,000,000 K.W.H. transmitted by  cable to Edmonton. The estimated  cost of the project is $3,500,000.  Bridge, Victoria���������Tenders will be  received by Wellington J. Dowler,  City Clerk, Victoria, until 4 pim. Sept.  28th, for repairs to the Rock Bay  bridge. The work consists of piling  and the  placing of heavy timbers.  Plans =aHd^specifi^  tained  from the City Engineer. Lighthouse, Blnilla Island���������Tenders  will be received by the deputy minister of the marine and fisheries, Ottawa, for the const, of a lighthouse to  be erected on Bonilla Island which lies  in Hecate strait to the westward of  Banks Island. Tenders close at noon  Sept. 21.  Tie tower for the light will be of  reinforced concrete and is to be placed  on a promontory of the. island, from  which it will be seen for a long distance at sea. A wooden dwelling for  the light keeper, an oil shed and a  boathouse' are also to be built.  Drydock, Shipbuilding Plant, North  Vancouver���������Plans are now being prepared by the engineers of the Dominion Shipbuilding Drydock & Engineering Co., Canada Life Bldg., for another  unit of the company's, proposed plant  to be erected on. the North Shore and  tenders will be invited for this part in>  about two weeks' time.
