This amount -will be gieatly reduced 4n tlie examination Which Is to be given by the  aldermen* to the measure, probably about  $500,000  having to come off.  The largest amount is naturally that  for public works, which Is about $800,-  000, including water works,- scavenging,  street maintenance and new -Vorks, while  the fire department asks for about $115,-  000, # and the police commissioners will  require about as much more. Bldgs., Ottawa���������The commission  of architects appointed by the government to direct the preparations of designs for the new departmental buildings at Ottawa has Just' submitted Its  report outlining the conditions of the  competition.  It will be open to competitors throughout the British Empire. There will be  at least two buildings and probably a  third one for the courts. Half a million  superficial feet of floor space will have  to be provided.  Designs of a general character will  first be submitted and from this number  the best six will be selected and the authors of these will be asked .to elaborate  their v designs. The one finally selecced  will get the job of superintending the  work based on his plans and will be  given a five, per cent commission. The  cost of the buildings willtrobably aggregate five million dollars.   '  The other five competitors who will  be asked to develop their general designs  will each receive $3,000. The sketches  will be received up to April 2 next.  Then three months will be given for the  best half dozen to develop their plans.  The competitors whose plans are accepted will be given a further period of  four months to prepare working plans.  Afterward tenders will be" called for,  but, in view of the time allowance, this  will  not. be  before  next autumn.  The cost "of the building will aggregate $5,000,000 dollars. The other five  competitors will be asked to develop  their general designs and each will receive $3,000." The sketches will'be received up to January 2, next.
