VANCOUVER ROAD Paving, South .Vancouver Municipal Clerk Springford is advertising the intention of the council to pave Victoria road from the south side of Kingsway to the south side of 43rd Ave. as a local improvement; est. cost $S9;769.40, of which $41,019.40 ,is to be paid by the corporation. The work involves a bitulithic pavement on a bituminous base 42 ft. in The proposed competition for a civic center scheme for Vancouver, for which a private individual donated $1,500 recently, seems to be-marking time only, until the war situation clears up.. It is regarded as extremely doubtful whether any Vancouver architects would enter the contest, unless the competition itself was held under the auspices of a committee satisfactory to the architects. The general feeling seems to be that it would be useless to submit sketches and plan if the conditions of the contest and the judg- ii.g* were left to someone not technically qualified to judge. The $1,500" isP intended to cover all expenses of the competition and this would not leave sufficient for prizes to. .make it worth while even for a practising architect to give his-time and attention to preparing plans.
