(Special to the Record) ' Municipal Work, VictoriaThe bulk of Victoria's programme of municipal work will be continued despite the war troubles, as long as there are funds on hand to pay contractors. The acceptance of the $18,000 paving plant wil be delayed until next year, the extension of the garbage wharf is called off, and certain contemplated expenditures in the waterworks service are eliminated, as are smaller items in various depts., representing a saving of about $100,000. The paving work under ' way has gone so far that it must be proceeded with. The northwest sewer ' -work must also proceed,- as well as the big extensions to the Sooke Lake waterworks system. Work o- the latter will only stop when the fund is exhausted. The Canadian Mineral Rubber Co. has resumed surfacing work" on Fort st, from Linden ave. to Yates st. The city's promise of 20,000 yards per 'month to the company has not been kept, as both the Fairfield' road and Oak Bay paving projects are regarded as practically "off" for this season. Painting Contract. XV. J. Barclay has been awarded the contract for painting "the bldgs. at the Isolation Hospital at $398. Steel Pipe Contract. Pipe, Victoria-The contract for laying steel pipe on cone, foundations.at the Northwest sewer outfall will be awarded soon. Only brie tender was' received, from Hutchinson Bros. & Co., Ltd.; referred to the city engineer. SEVERAL PROPOSALS IN - .. FOR FRASER RIVERJETTYj Jetty, Fraser River-Several tenders were submitted at Ottawa for the construction of the second section of the north jetty at the mouth of the Fraser. river, the period for receiving tenders' having ended. It was feared that the war conditions would operate to suspend much .work now being carried on by the public works department, but this fear was dispelled by the official announcement from Ottawa that there would be no suspension. C.'UNIVERSITY BOARD University Point GreyThe follow-, ing statement has been given out by the B. C. University board in connection with the erection of the proposed science bldg.: , " The Board of Governors of the University of British Columbia has been most anxious to proceed with the letting of the contract for the science building, for which tenders have been received. Twenty-three contractors had applied for and -received plans and specifications. Owing to the very greatly disturbed financial condition dependent upon.ttie war situation,.only seven tenders were received. ' Under the circumstances the Board has returned the; tenders unopened arid is considering the question of advertising for tenders for excavation,, the concrete work and such other work as may be involved in carrying the building to this stage. By this means it would be possible to ^provide against delay in the completion of" -the building * on the - one hand and to guard against undue risk possibly involved in the award of the whole contract under present disturbed conditions. KEEP POSTED Read the Record P. C. ;S. Courses during spare time. - One letter gives the romance of a young man in California that began with little or no^educationjj another tells the stojy of a high^ ^sch^oTgradlH^ educated for everything but to make a living. Here are the heart-trobs of a fellow that toiled 12 hours a day and studied his Course as best he could; of a foremen or superintendent that enrolled because his ambition aimed at still bigger things. No matter where you live, how little spare time you have, or how brief your schooling, the I. C. S. can raise your salary. That statement is backed' with 20 years of success and a record of 400 or more advancement letters re.ceived every month. I. C. S. Courses have made draftsmen, foremen, and superintendents of shop hands.; building contractors, architects, structural and concrete engineers of carpenters and masons; advertising men, window trimmers, chemists, illustrators, and designers of clerks; electrical, mechanical and steam engineers of laborers; mine inspectors, foremen, and mining engineers of mine workers; bridge engineers, surveyors and mappers, civil engineers, gas engineers, automobile runners and civil service employees of young men willing to use their spare time to mold a career. Suppose you were to increase your earnings only $20 a month what a fine return that would be on your spare-time investment! Yet some have increased their earnings ?250 a month. Mark and mail this coupon and you will receive free information how you can increase your earnings by spare-time study. Archer, Wm.
