City Comptroller Raymur, of Victoria, has listed the following items as those which can be cut from the proposed civic expenditures for the year: Electric light station $1,000, isolation hospital $2,000, stables and garage $13,- 400, repair to and extension of garbage wharf $G,000, motor truck.$6,000, outfall for surface drain at Ross Bay $4,- 500, paving plant $18,000, water works maintenance $10,000, repair to water works "main $7,500, inspection of main for leaks $3,000, truck and runabout for waterworks department $1,500, carnival committee $8,000, building fund of Y.W.C.A. $2,500, Oxford street" surface drain $5,000, debenture interest $25,227. Johnson Street'Bridge Bridge, Vi6tor,iaAlthough practically at the point where it1 was thought that construction tenders could be invited for the proposed $350,000 Johnson street bridge, it is now almost certain that the Victoria council will not attempt to dispose ..of the required bond issue until the war situation has cleared up. This is taken, practically, tto mean that the bridge will not be contracted for until the international difficulties are settled between the nations. Jail Tenders Soon Jail, VictoriaIt is expected that the tenders will shortly be invited for the city jail, as the council has already instructed the architect to call for tenders, and as the money - is available, there need to be no delay in this regard, it being one of .the few -works which can be put in hand without the sale of further debentures. Waterworks, Saanich. The'.. joint meeting between the councils of the city, and the municipality of Saanich to discuss the question of a water sun- ply for the latter has been called for next Thursday evening. The arrangements under which the city will supply Snanich with a supply and the rate to be fixed for it will be the chief point for consideration. C. S. Courses during spare time. "^=""One"letter"glves"theToinahce"b began with little or no education; another tells the story of a high school graduate in Maine that found himself educated for everything but to make a living. Here are the heart-trobs of a fellow that toiled 12 hours a day and studied, his Course as best he could; of a foremen or superintendent that enrolled because his ambition aimed at still bigger things. No matter where you live, how little spare time you have, or how brief your schooling, the 1. C.'.S. can raise your salary. That statement is backed with 20 years of success and a record of 400 or more advancement letters received every month. ' I. C. S. Courses have made draftsmen, foremen, and superintendents of shop hands; building contractors, architects, structural and concrete engineers of carpenters and masons; advertising men, window trimmers, chemists, illustrators, and designers of clerks; electrical, mechanical and steam engineers of laborers; mine inspectors, foremen, and mining engineers of mine workers; bridge engineers, surveyors and mappers, civil engineers, gas engineers, automobile runners and civil service employees of young men willing to UB6 their spare time to mold a career. Suppose you were to increase your earnings only $20 a month what a fine return that would be on your spare-time investment! Yet some have increased their earnings ?250 a month.
