It is iigt known generally that cut- tteflsb aro cultivated on aome farms in order to be "milked." These tfutJidSah tenon axes located on parts of the Britiah coast, ami the cuttlefish aro kpt in tanks or ponds to be milked of their Ink. The pond or tauk is connected witli the sea by u pipe, and a thousand or moro cuttlefish aro kept in a Single oas. Tbey form a most curiouB sight aa they move about trailing their long anas and staring out of their budging eyes. They are guarded by screens, which prevent theio from being scared, for if they are suddenly frightened the cuttlefish will -squirt their milk into the water, and it woukl therefore pc lost. This fluid, or milk, is very valuable, and each cuttlefish will yield about $4 worth a year. It is secreted in & b&s, which can be .opened aud closed at will, the cuttlefish ejecting tlie fluid to darken the water bo that it may escape unseen when attacked. The test cuttlefish are procured in China, where for aome reason* or other they produce tfic best qunlity of'milk. When the farmer considers it opportune to milk the cuttlefish he proceeds bv opening the, sluices of tho pond mid gently agitating the water. The, cuttles then swim around the pond, and as soon as one passes throupli th" sluice is closed. The cuttle passes'down a small channel into a basin or metnl ree.epffl.cle, nnd as soon ns it is nocnrelv there the water is drained off. It is Mien ivifhtened and nt once squirt? the fluid from the bn?:. When it is exb:u,s*ed it. is lifted out, the milk is collected, nnd the basin is .prepared for another. WAGING WAR ON RATS. Measures Taken In England to Exterminate the Pest. The war against rats is being was- ed vigorously in Great Britain, where the annual ' dam aue they cause is variously estimated at amounts ranging from $50,000,000 to $75,000,000.
