The Institute was, years since, placed under  the ban of the Church because books were to  be found in its library which all good Catbo-  Ilea were interdicted from reading, and news  pipers in its reading-room which the faithful  w*re   likewise   interdicted   from   reading;  Although the majority of the members belonged to the party in Lower Canada known  as the Rouge party, popularly supposed to  be free-thinkers in the matter of religion, >nd  holding very ultra political!opinions, stilj  many good Catholics, prizing highly liberty  of thought, speech and actioo   io   secular  matters, considered tbe ruling of the Church  arbitrary, ber interference with their tem  poral freedom unbearable, and they refused  to sever tbeir connection with the society at  the bidding of the Church.   Among such was  Mr  Guibord,  a respectable citizen of >Jont  real, a good Catholic, who died severaf years  since, and to whom the laet rues of bis Church  were administered before death. But, although  the last rites of the Church were not refused  to the dying man, the Church, refused to allow  his  remains   to   be buried ^n consecrated  ground, and his widow brought suit against  the ecclesiastical authorities in order to< com  pel  thorn  to give a Catholic  burial to the]  remains of her husband.   The case baa"been  adjudicated upon by all the LiW Courts of  Canada, and has been decided sometimes for,  sometimes against the plaintiff, according to  the   religioefl' complexion   of   the  various  Judges, until it wag carried before the Privy  Council of England, and that final Court of  Appeal issued its mandate ordering the ec-  olesiastioal   authorities ��������� to furnish Christian  burial for tbe deceased in consecrated ground.
