"''The following extract from the London Morning Poet, an influential Liberal journal, shows that Brilish Columbia s appeal to the Imperial Government meets with the ap proval of both the great political parlies in "England :': The British Government ought o.t to leave Brilish Columbia to deaf single- banded with Canada in this affair. Thei e can be no doubt that British Colnmbia has been badly treated. {The {Imperial. Govern men f agreed to and sanctioned the union, of British Columbia to,Canada, but only npon- flit terms -which it ia now sought to change. The Im pe'rial guarantee for a portion;of the funds for the railway was promised on the condi ti ens which it is now sought to modify. Neither "Brilish Columbia nor its friends claim that the railway Should be completed by 1881, for that, however possible it might once have been, is not now possible. But what they do contend for is that* th e>r ail way should be begun without any-further delay than may % he indispensable for the preparation, of-.the plans and contracts, and that the construction of the lino should be proceeded with as fas' n circumstances will allow,of. Surely British Columbia may look to the Imperial Government to pro en re such terms for her, In fact the vigilance of the Home Government U. required to prevent as far as possible an injury being inflicted on a very distant and almost powerless colony. Judging from the past, we should suppose, that Lord Carnarvon would be well inclined himself to see I hat full justice is done to British Columbia, And we trust that he is directing his attention to the p flairs of that remote region, which, as we v nve freq nen tly, shown be fo re. m ay h a ve a n i'nmense importance not only for Canada but fur Great Britain." > Tub Victoria Daily Standard says ihe Hon. Title | The Cariboo Sentinel |
Publisher | Barkerville, B.C. : George Wallace |
Date Issued | 1874-08-08 |
Description | The Cariboo Sentinel was published in Barkerville, in the Cariboo region of central British Columbia, and ran from June 1865 to October 1875. At the time, Barkerville was home to a fast-growing community of miners who had been attracted to the Cariboo region by the discovery of gold. The Sentinel was published by George Wallace, and its stated objective was not only to disseminate mining intelligence, but also to eradicate official abuse[s] of power, both within the Cariboo region and beyond (vol. 1, no. 1, p. 2). |
