I    VANCOUVER — The    proposed  scheme  for the  reorganization of the  fire department of the city which included the closing of certain (ire halls  in the outlying portions of the city, is  still being discussed by the ratepayers  of those localities.    It is unlikely that  anything will be done for some time as  it is understood that the civic fire and  police committee is waiting on the receipt of certain  information  from  the  fire  underwriters, which  is  not  forthcoming, and until that is received any  question of reorganization is  likely to  be held in abeyance. VANCOUVER—Following on the receipt of the news that the city had won  the appeal in the Champion & White  case instructions were given by the  civic bridges and railways committee  on Tuesday afternoon to the city engineer to request the contractors to  go ahead Immediately with the construction of the seawall which is to be  erected in connection, with the C.N.R. "Lands,"  upon which $565,000 is to be spent this  ■year, and "agriculture,',' upon which  $176,500 will probably be expended, are  each given a service to'themselves, thus  .greatly, reducing the "miscellaneous"  'total.  Present conditions have, also necessitated more and larger hospitals, the result being an unusually large mciease  for hospitals and charities La.st year  $16,000 was voted in the way of assistance in the construction ot hospitals.  This year'about $150,000 "will piobably  be granted for that purpose. Grants to  refuge homes, aid societies, etc, is increased from  $19,000   to $SO,000..  University  of B,  C.  Among the appropriations in this  year's estimates is a conditional one of  $200,000 for the University of British  Columbia. Last year's estimate was  $17r»,000. Included in the works and  buildings to be-constructed by the Public Works Department are the following; Okalla prison farm, $15,000;  improvement of government reserve,  Burnaby, $10,000; mental hospital and  •colony farm, Bssondale, $35,y00; piovln-  «fal government buildings, London (completion and maintenance), $175,000;  maintenance, $8,000'. The appropriations  provincial rioiinal school, Vancouver.  for roads, .streets, bridges and wharves  in each constituency are the same .is  last year. Chilliwack gets *33,300;  Delta. $22,500; Dewdney, $CS,o00, and  Richmond $10,000. JSItrhty thousand i.s  revoted for l<ingsway through the Mnnl-  crpality ov Burnaby. Experienced mining men say that  they have never seen more activity in  the mines - around Ainsworth, Kaslo  and in the Slocan district itself than  at present.  After being idle ten years/the Paradise mine, Windermere, is once more  ship] ing to Trail, eight teams hauling  ore to the railway, the mine now employing 20 men.  Prof. J. G. Gwillim of Kingston, Out'  who lived in the Kootenays in the  nineties, is again visiting the mining  section of this province, investigating  some molybdenite ore deposits.  Eight cotKges have been completed}  at Copper Mountain for employees of  the B C. Copper Co., and several more  will  be   erected.    These  cottages are  24 x 2G feet and have six rooms.  Tl e D. C. Cooper Co. is installine a  pumping- plant to raise water from the  Similkamoen river to furnish power  for the Copper .Mountain mine equipment, and a 5-ton experimental mill. The Utica, Slocan, is figuring on  having a cash surplus of !ji25,000 in  hand when smelter returns are received from recent shipments and contemplates equipping its mine with a power plant and driving a long cross-cut  tunnel to open the ledge at gieat  depth.  Highland Valey Co. lias received  smelter returns on 31 tons of crude  copper ore which it shipped from the  mine to Ashcroft on the return trips of  the freighters engaged in hauling the  machinery for the concentrator, the  company is now erecting on its property.
