YEAR EDMONDS—No' less than. 37 new dwellings have been erected in* Ward Six, West Burnaby, since the first of the year, while many others have been added to and improved. The value of the new houses is placed at about $75,- 000. Building in other wards has also shown much progress. NEED OF STANDARDIZATION IN BUILDING TO CUT HIGH COSTS. Conditions during and since the war have- brought home to evers'one the necessity of maintaining production with less labor. Manufacturers have realized this ahd have sought all possible means for securing efficiency. The most effective means of increasing production and the real, basic cause of Canada's industrial growth is standardization. Elimination of duplications in products and parts has reduced the number of manufacturing operations and effected savings-in time and labor. -Comparisons show how hopelessly inadequate the old methods would be under modern conditions. Compare the book of today, turned out by thousands on a modern printing press, each one . exactly alike, ; with the methods of a few centuries ago when each book had to be laboriously written by hand. Practically every modern manufacturing industry presents illustrations just as,striking. In "the building field, only Initial ( progress has been made in standardization. In some lines, such1 as steel.sash, a fair degree of standardization has been reached, but building in "general remains' a strictly made-to-order propositions. Even.in bricks, whose history dates back to the Pharaohs, one will hardly find two manufacturers making exactly the same size. The same applies to a number of other standard building materials. Also in tile, if it is desired to have them all of- the same size it is necessary to purchase the entire supply used on any building job from the one manufacturer. The cstase of tlie lack of standardization in the building field' is .largely a matter of evolution., Building being one" of the oldest industries, has developed processes and methods which have become traditional. In former times, it was simple and logical to build as one went along and to meet any individual requirement. .Labor and material were plentiful and inexpensive, and needs were not urgent. Modern times, and particularly the f NEW IRRIGATION DAM AT present day, will not permit of such methods if volume and economy of construction is to be obtained. "The greatest building need of the present time Is standardization. This . . tem from the former owner, Mr. J. M. Robinson, has applied • to the provincial water comptroller to form a water municipality under tho provincial Water Act, which will allow of future extensions and additions to the' system if desired. Assurances have been received from the department that the application will receive favorable consideration. -v Eight separate desks, mounted on a single, pedestal, have been designed by. an astronomer In an observatory in the West Indies so he can work at any of them without leaving his chair. ITEMS BELOW HAVE BEEN PUBLISHED PREVIOUSLY BUT ARE HELD FOR READY REFERENCE AUGUST BUILDING IS GOOD AT POINT GREY That a good pace in construction operations is being kept up in the Point Grey, district is evident in the Monthly report of the building inspec-, tor-from whose offices seventy-seven permits have been issued during August. The largest structural work was in.residences the total being 53 valued at $212,040.00, there being no permits " issued for any large public or business buildings during the' month. Ten repair jobs and" 14 garages constituted the remainder of the permits. As compared with the same month of last year the result is very favorable despite the fact that the 1919 total for August was $347,570 as two ■ schools totalling $188,000 were included in the month for last year. The remafnder of last year's permits being only 47 of a value totalling but $159,570, this year's report is a very favorable one and is so considered the Point Grey inspector. A TRIP FROM INSIDE In view of the report of the Cleveland Grand Jury, the following opinion boldly stated at the annual convention of the Amercian Federation of Labor by John Donlin of .Chicago, recently, re-elected president of the Building Trades Department of that body, is worth noting. ' "The wage-earner is just as much responsible for the high cost of living &b any other agency," said Mr. Donlin In his annual report. ''If every worker doing physical labor would insist that production equal " pre-war times there would soon be a reduction in the price of commodities. The higher wages go and the more production falls off the more the worker is going to be' hurt." ,- Not a "one-job" truck, but built for all-round serviceability on] a definite basis of Low Cost Ton-Mile—this is what the thousands of Garfords are demonstrating year after year. .
