T/he need for creosoting piles .used
.for wharves and piers or any structure erected in the saltwater, prolong
their life and protect them from destructive action of teredoes and other
marine borers, is well known to engineers. In fact it has constituted
one of the chief wharfage construction problems, especially on the Pacific coast, for decades. Creosoting,
as well as the sheeting of piles with
copper and various other means have
been adopted to prevent the action of
the marine borers, but of late the efficiency and economy of creosoted piles
has been proven beyond dispute. Tur
thermore it has been show*U&y_fi*.i
ence that some of thjj'very first piles,
creosoted on the Pacific coast were
treated in a remarkabiT^efficient and
thorough manner, considering how
much more we think we'know nowadays than was known thenv concerning .the. various methods arid-materials used.'
Prbm. time'to time^as structures
are demolished to make way for extensive improvements there is afforded an opportunity for observing on a
large* scale the behaviour of creosote
treated piles. An excellent instance
of this kind was recently, noted in
San :Francisco.' -'
A wharf owned by the Southern "Pacific Railway on San- Francisco Bay
was removed to make room for port
improvements. This wharf was the
oldest creosoted pile structure which
thus far has' been dismantled on the
entire Pacific Coast and contained
about 14,000 creosoted piles which.
had been in service for periods ranging from 18 to 29 years. Of these,
piles, interest centers particularly in
600 which were of Douglas' fir, well-
seasoned before being treated with
creosote by the Bethel process in the
fall of 1889, and were driven in 1890.
Records show that under a pressure
of 200 pounds per square inch, and,a
temperature of 260 degrees Fahrenheit, the piles absorbed 14.17 pounds
of creosote per cubic foot. g
Of these 600 piles of Douglas fir, 33
were selected at random for test
purposes when the wharf was dismantled. Out of this number 22 (67
per cent) werefeentirely sound; two
(9 per cent.) bad been very slightly
attacked by teredoes; six (18 per
cent.) had been severely attacked,'and
two (6 per cent.) were so damaged as
to be unfit for future use. These percentages ■ were typical of the entire
lot, it is reported, and about 70 per
cent of these 600 Douglas fir -piles are
to be re-driven just as they are. In
fact, this percentage of piles suitable
for re-driving, it is reported, -.applies
approximately to the entire 14,000
piles. Those not as suitable showed
damage only between mud-line , and
high-water mark, and other portions
of these piles were in good condition.
The results of this study and exacting test in one of the hardest harbors on the coast as far as teredoes
are concerned, are believed to confirm
the theory that a creosoted pile is
marine borers such as exist in Pacifiq
Coast waters, so long as the shell or
outer portion of the pile impregnated with creosote remains Intact.

The fire was gotten under control after oyer an hour's hard work and with a loss estimated at $35,000. In tlie case of the Tunstall block'fire it is believed to have originated in the electrical'. cabinet • on the third floor with* the .result that the connections for' the-house alarm- system were all burned '.out, the alarms would' not. work, and to'add to the danger1 and difficulties, of the situation, the halls and. rooms of the building were left in total darkness made all (he worse by the thick smoke which overcame a number,.of the tenants.' The damage in this blaze has been roughly estimated at $15,000. . Fire adjusters are already at work on both blocks to fix the damages and it is expected that tenders will be called shortly for the necessary' repairs. A. H.
