Bldg. have been officially  awarded the contract for the erection  of the Canada Western Cordage Company's plant at Sapperton. But the war  was not won then.    Canada, as part  of the great British Empire, was helping the latter carry the burdens of a  large share of the  world and at the  same time wage the most terrible warfare  that  this  weary  old  world  has  .  ever known  on  seven  fronts, on  the  seven seas, beneath them and in the  air  over  them.    When   the   previous  loans were floated, there was no telling just how long this titanic struggle against German autocracy, was going to last.    There  were always  the  doubters—happily vastly  in  the minority—who feared that the war would  have to stop because all the comDat-  ants—Britain included—would he financially  exhausted.    Yet  in  spite  of  all that Canadians subscribed not only  the huge sums the government asked  for,  but almost  double  on   the  occasions of the previous loans.   And only  in the case of the 1918 Victory Loan  could the tremendous struggle in war-  torn Europe he said to be anywhere  near reaching  a  conclusion.    It  will  be    remembered    that    Sir    Thomas  White,   finance   minister   of   Canada,  who so ably steered the financial shin  of state through    the    tortuous    arm  rocky channel of the war-time years,  predicted    that     the"   Victory    Loan  of   1918   would   be   a   "Victory   Loan-  indeed. Fraser, manager of the Vancouver  Magnetite Iron and Steel Smelting  Company. The new, smelter company  is capitalized at $1,000,000 with the  majority of the stock held in Canada.  Decision to build a furnace here followed exhaustive tests made near the  Rurnaby power house of the B. C. E.  R., which showed that electric smelting was quite practicable and decidedly economical over the usual coke  methods. Several carloads were  shipped a few years ago from the Mercury and returned 200 ounces in silver  and 50 per cent. lead.  All mines in Republic, Wash., camp  closed down last Saturday as the result of a demand by employees for an  advance of $1.00 per day in wages.  About 50 or 60 men are affected.
