VICTORIA—Preliminary investigations and reports on what parts of the southern part of Saanich should be included in the extension of the city's water service were ordered to be made at the meeting at Royal Oak last week between the Victoria and Saanich officials. The investigations and reports will be made at once by City Engineer Rust and Municipal Clerk Cowper, of Saanich. It was said at the meeting that the abandoned Elk Lake water works of the city would not be used in connection with the scheme, but that, water would be taken from the city's Sooke Lake service. A reservoir will likely be built either on Christmas Hill or Mount Tolmie. H. XV. Brown of H. W. Brown & Co., managers for the. Canada West Coast Navigation Company, which concern built twelve auxiliary schooners on this coast, is now in Duluth in connection with negotiations, which if consummated, will result in ten more vessels being built by the Cameron- Genoa' Company, with which H. W. Brown is closely identified. It is understood that ,the proposed plans provide for the construction of six auxiliary schooners, of the same design to the' five-masted vessels which have already been built by the Company, and four steamers of the same type now under way at this plant for the Imperial Munitions Board. French and American capital is at the back of the new building scheme, and within the next few days some definite announcement should be available regarding the proposed contracts.
