Tbe harbor bdrfrd's application was not opposed by,the city for the reason that a previous' asreeinent was given- the city by the harbor board that the city would bo compensated for this ten foot strip by the board acquiring and "N: turning over to the city a strip of the same width along the youth side of l he street, as the new spur track will be laid on the north side of Powell .-•ti-ect. There happens to be a number of important 'industries located -pi the north side of.the street, such as Ram- say'"Bros.1; 'biscuit factory" and similar concerns, which will have to be compensated quite handsomely for giving a strip varying 'from ten down to four feet off the front of their premises. These losses, either separately or combined make a truly stupendous sum and when one reflects that by far tlie greater part of this loss might have been avoided, our comment on our own intelligence, taking <us as a whole, is far from complimentary. The International Association of Fire Marshals now proposes a nationwide campaign of education in fire- prevention in both countries. It is planned to enlist the help of the.news- papers in both countries in . thiss enterprise. Thus the first essential step will be to educate the newspapers. We have no doubt that once the editors of the big daily newspapers are shown the fundamentals in fire prevention, "they will most heartily enter into the campaign and, ■ know what should be said, they will say it in a convincing way. • . These huge losses by Are are attributed chiefly to shingle roofs, poor electrical instillations, and pure carelessness. Perhaps carelessness is the greatest of all the causes. And carelessness is something generally ingrained so that no amount of educating will cure it. The shingle roof may be replaced by one not so readily burnable; the electric wiring may be done more efficiently, but carelessness, a personal habit, or a personal vice, seldom is—seldom, amenable to anything short of a club or imprisonment. * Carelessness must be met with devices and methods, that work automatically, and here enters the roost valuable of all fire-preventing measures—the sprinkler system. Pipe buildings to carry water and equip the piping with sprinkler heads that will let the water out on the flames as soon as they are started, and the loss by fire will be measurably lessened. The greatest trouble in getting the chill room, meat storage building and a warehouse for the storage of fruit and feed. The contractor who secures the job will be allowed to use the roof trusses and considerable of the frame work of the present market building at Lytton Square. Plans and specifications may be obtained from City Building Inspector Turnbull at the city hall, and tenders will be allowed the use of the plans for three days only, with the alternative of having the loan of a complete set upon deposit of $25. Each tender must be accompanied by the usual five per cent check.. TENDERS CLOSE TODAY ON'CANYON CITY SCHOOL Tenders will close at noon today with Mr. A. E. Foreman, provincial government engineer, for the erection of a one-room addition to the Canyon City school in the Kaslo electoral district. It is expected that the announcement of the award of the contract will be made early next.week. *Mica mountain, near ,Tete' Jaime Cacho, B. C, containing large deposits of mica upon which some development work was done as far ba'cK as thirty years ago, will be further developed "by a Calgary syndicate who have staked again a number of old claims on the mountain and are making substantial expenditures towards this end.
