In Canada today there are countless1 people who look out oh the horizon, of their lives and. seeing a glow-worm,'believe it to be a conflagration. Mrs. Smith, next door, has a wonderful son already sleeping in a grave in France; and Mrs. Jones, across the street, has a Red Cross daughter destroyed by a Hun bomb and buried in alien soil. What are our troubles to these? Business has been cut in half, say you. Do you know that hundreds of corporations have had to close their doors entirely due to the war?'' You cry out that the cost of your every necessities has Arisen over 50 per cent. Adkison & Dill GENERAL CONTRACTORS Specialists In Reinforced Concrete 325 Rawe St Sly. -7fl--Baj-._2.lt September 30th was the end of the fiscal year of the Consolidated company. The annual meeting is usually in December. Local Manager Chas. M. Campbell, of the Granby company, is reported to have been looking at some copper properties in Northern Manitoba. Report ,of the high grade strike in the Utica, Slocan, states that ruby silver, running 4,000 ounces to <■ the ton, has been taken out. Three carloads have been shipped but no returns have yet been received. Some time this month Bonnington Falls electric energy is expected to be operating the Northport smelter— which 'will make four smelters ' at which it is furnished, Trail, Grand Forks and Greenwood being the other three. The present rate of shipping, 40 tons of lad ore daily, from the Electric Point mine to the Trail smelter is expected to be increased to around 100 tons per day soon, when the new mile and a half tramway is completed. The finishing touches are now being put on the tramway. The Silversitmh, formerly the Slocan Star, of Sandon, sent its first shipment to Trail smelter this week. Reports from this mine since coming underthe management of R. H. Stewart, for years in charge of the Consolidated company mines and smelter, are most favorable. A delayed, shipment of four cars of flouspar was received by the Trail smelter a few days ago—the last of the stuff from Kentucky, long de- pany's own "flouspar property, now layed in transit. In future the corn- being, opened in the Boundary, will produce .what may be required. —Borrow and Buy Bonds— H.D.Rees W.A.Kruse W.C.Jenkins The Electric Shop MARKED ACTIVITY AT NORTH SHORE YARDS NORTH VANCOUVER—Three stiff- leg cranes with SO-foot booms, are being installed in the Wallace Shipyards to lift and swing the heavy materials for the construction of the three new boats to be built for the. Dominion Government. These cranes will be fed by the railways leading down between the berths, and the new system will greatly facilitate the handling of all construction and equipment. Electric motors will generate power for these hoists. , o Dredging has commenced alongside the proposed dock of the Lyall Shipbuilding Company, where it is pro: posed, to erect a 500-foot wharf and shed for the purpose of equipping all the vessels that are built in the com pany's yards. The piling is nearly all on the ground at the present time, and the square timbers have been cut and boomed ready for floating to position as soon-as the piles are driven. W. Seymour, of the Seymour Tire & Rubber Co., Ltd., distributor of Goodyear tires, "the more careful and more experienced drivers control the speed of the car more by the proper use of the throttle than by, harsh use of tlie foot or emergency brakes. To suddenly dart forward and then suddenly lock the wheels is a strain upon the entire car and more especially upon the tires. "When the wheels are locked they slide over the surface of the road or street with the momentum and weight of tlie car dragging one way and the brakes holding them solid. "This, produces the same effect as applying an emery wheel to the surface of the tire in one spot." : —Borrow and Buy Bonds— This prohibition of importation also applies to the body and chassis for j such automobiles when the "value of I the body or chassis together with the I usual parts required to complete the J automobile amounts to $1,200 or up- I wards f.o.b. place of export. Every tire has embossed on the ..ide a serial number. It is important that (he car owner should have a record of this number in each case and such record-should be made when the tire is bought. Not only is it cte- i sirable to have this record for adjust- | ments with the company, but in case ! of theft possession of the serial record | is often invaluable aid to the police. J One of the commonest mistakes in driving is the "riding" of the clutch, which perhaps a majority of operators indulge in. If the foot is kept constantly on the ( clutch pedal, even though lightly, the action causes rapid war of he clutch thrust bearing, and clutch slipping. If the clutch is of the cone variety the facing is wprn excessively, while in the disk clutch in oil the extra heat tends to thin die oil and permits grabbing. Drivers should keep off the clutch except when it is to be operated. ?.\'. . .».# „ k | T T t_> ■ i -■' ■» * •_ '_* I ronorti^n nsgid'hoimorc irn t Canadian Allis-Chalmers Ud.
