With the steady increase in business activity, that has resulted since
peace was declared and the western
troops reached home. Vancouver merchants ■ are' manifesting a keen interest in the problem ? of utilizing the
basement space in, their buildings to
the best advantage and in making this
often hitherto neglected part of their
stores -mor« attractive and convenient for shoping. Because of the steady
growth of the city and the natural
congestion during shoping hours consequent upon such a limited area a'3
that occupied by the busines heart
of Vancouver, merchants are finding
an increasing need for "additional floor
. space. This has led to the advance^
ment of numerous w^^i for utilizing
the space beneath 'the ground floor.
High rental values and the natural
expansion of business— situation
■which prevails here in. very mar sea
form already and. promises- to grow
more acute in the hear future—are
the chief factors, they point out, in
working this change of sentiment in
favor of popularizing the downstairs
departments and working a decided
change of sentiment in their favor.
The next few years, local merchants
believe, will see a great majority of
Vancouver retail store managers finding more varied uses for their downstairs spaces, applying to them service features which heretofore have
not been thought of as part of department store arrangements. In this
connection local department^ stores'
point to the sensible uses to which
basements in New York have been put
since the introduction of the subway
system there. In*New York now, Jviv-.
tually every department store on'
.tjaose. streets under, yvhich-jthe subway.
runs has an, entrance-leading' directly^
into these stores, thus enabling shoppers .to pass quickly from the cars in-
.to: the store building; .This arrangement,, convenient and- accessible for
the shopping public, has brought many
thousand feet of floor space into immediate use and helped'to relieve the
enormously congested conditions surrounding shopping there.
In Vancouver it is understood that
at least two large. department stores
intend to make important changes in
their basements in the near future
with a view to utilizing that valuable.
floor space to better advantage. This
general tendency on the- part of .up-to-
date merchants is something that architects will have to take into consideration in future. For while Vancouver bias no subway as yetv there are
a number of fine building locations
available in the business districts that

Mr. Reston has" an experience of over nine years in the electrical business in Vancouver as well as eastern cities. For several years past he has been chief marine electricion for the well-known shipyard firm of John Coughlan & Sons. During that time he has had charge of the electrical installation of the first nine of the 8,800- ton steel vessels turned out by that firm. The excellent satisfaction which- the electrical equipment on these vessels; gave is in itself a tribute to Mr. Reston'sfskill. • ••' Since going into business' for himself Mr. Reston has already been awarded the contract for the installation of the. electrical equipment of the new Kitsilano High School being erected at-the-corner of Eleventh Avenue and Trafalgar Sti^et. 21129—Columbia Paper Co.. 1038 Hamilton St.—Ford Truck { . 2.1130—T. Due largely to the influx resulting from the commencement of shipbuilding operat'ons on a large scale in Prince Rupert, houses are at present' almost impossible to secure, evpn. a^ exhorbitant rents, Mr. Large declares. Labor for ordinary building operations is also very scarce, due to opportunities to secure more lucrative and <*tesd!er employment at the shipyard where two large steel vessels are being built for th.e Dominion government; with ' further orders for more vessels in sight when these are finished.
