Two notable examples of this in the vicinity of #ancouvor can bo found al loco, the Imperial Oil Company's model refinery town opposite Port Moody, and at Powell River where the big paper manufacturing company is constantly adding to the large number of cosy cottages which it has built for homes for its employees. Families should have decent homes at a reasonable price if the morality of the nation is to be preserved. Anarchy is bred in slum districts. The 500,000 new homes needed in Canada as well as the million said to be required in the United States, will not come of themselves, and these national emergencies must be met by concerted action. Realty experts, brokers and financial men smile wisely and venture the opinion that the politicians at. least, have "passed the buck" and passed it quickly. This follows- the recent intimation that the provincial government considers the housing problem a federal matter and that no action looking towards, financial aid, will be taken by .the provincial legislature at its session next spring, the. question of further aid to a national housing programme being passed up to the Dominion' Government for its "session riext' year In the.measures, for hastening production of new houses, which really in the one important consideration before normal conditions could; be. anticipated, builders and operators fail to find any. immediate relief. They are agreed, however, that the best idea for the-moment Is to.urgevevery one who could possibly get the money to buy or build, a home for his own family and thus perform a patriotic duty .towards alleviating the rental situation. That this is the most favorable time for this movement is attested by/prominent builders and contractors, who point out that while in the -.effete east and middle western provinces and states building operations are necessarily at a standstill during the winter months; that does not apply here in Vancouver, where frame construction at least, can be successfully carried on right through the winter months. Many families in small and large cities throughout' Canada and the United State3 are vainly seeking homes. Factories are moving from their present locations to small towns where the .economic conditions are not so favorable "from the economic standpoint, in order to find quarters for their workmen. This applies also to stores, enquiries- having been recently made by a druggist who is anxious to open up business in this growing centre. . •' Considerable improvements have recently been made to, the Bella Vista Hotel, which is still being operated under ' the capable management - of Mrs. R. Probert. The building has been raised, a new roof put on/ while plumbers are now engaged in effecting repairs to the sanitary arrangements. necting the two Republics is the Trans-Andino from Los Andes, Chili to Mendoza, Argentina. _ SEPTEMBER FIRE LOSS IS VERY SMALL IN CITY Although the local fire department received a total of 52 calls during the month of September, the responses were so smart that the loss was kept down very .small, in. fact,,the smallest during the year so far. There, .were only twelve fires where, much actual damage occurred. The total fire damage amounted to 138,507 on which 837,197 insurance was paid, leaving a total property loss above insurance at only 11,310.
