Shepheard, Federal member for Nanaimo, has accepted the office of inspector of dredging  for British Columbia. Mr. Shepherd is  an engineer by profession and has been  connected with mining and railway  work in Canada, Australia, New Zealand and Alaska. ' VICTORIA—The Department of Public Works is calling for tenders for the  installation of a drainage system for  the Girls' Industrial School, Cassiar St.  Vancouver, bids to be in by noon, Oct.  26. Tenders are alao being received  up to noon, Oct. 1.6, for the erection of  a one-room school in the Limit School  District, Salmon Arm Municipality, and  up to noon, Oct. 26th, for a four-room  school, for the South Wellington district.  PRINCE GEORGE—Among the Dominion Government telephone line improvements provided for is a branch of  the main line from the 70-Mile House  to Mount Olie, on the Thompson River,  which will serve the settlers in this  rapidly developing agricultural section.  A line from Clinton gives communication to about 300 settlers, and will be  of great benefit to the ranchers of the  Chilcoten. A branch line from Que:*  nel to Keithley Creek is also provided  for, and several other short branches  will be constructed. The main line  will be extended from Ashcrqft to  Agassiz.' thus giving the upper country direct telephone communication  with Coast cities. $10,000  for  roads,   and   Nicomen   Island
the same amount for dyking; $13,500 is a
subsidy for the Ladner-Woodward ferry.
The   vote   of   $400,000   on   last   year's
estimates for the Second Narrows bridge
is left off.    For bridges generally $450,-
000  Is   set  down,  while   for   the   bridge
over the Fraser River at Prince George
there will-be an appiopriation of $150,-.
An item in.the Land Department ap-
nropriations is that for $20,000. for
•timber testing ! and investigation of
wood products." An indication that the
arovernment intends to continue seeking
•verseas markets for the B. C. lumber
trade is that another $50,000 is appropriated1 for salaries, travelling expenses,
and purchase of material.

Coal mining rights of the Dominion  in Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Alberta, the Yukon Territory, the Northwest  Territories and a portion of the Province of -British Columbia, may be leased for a;term of twenty-one years at  an annual rental of fl'per acre. No  more than 2,560 acres will be leased  to one applicant.
