PRICES OF HARDWOODS LIKELY TO ADVANCE IN NEAR, FUTURE • There is less concern just now in the building trade generally over high prices than over the. stability of prices. < The general opinion is that a new price level has .been established by economic conditions following the world war. Everyone has been waiting for prices,of all lines of building material, and especially hardwoods, to drop, but they have not dropped. Instead we '.find advances, in a number oi items in hard; woods. , Flooring has gone, .up; so have panels. . ^ ■ Advances in hardwood prices at this juncture, with such a large number of the better class of ^dwellings under contemplation, ' would be a rather serious matter for the locqj' building trade as well as affecting the industry all across Canada. Tho construction of buildings and' manufacture of peace-time, conditions are now in full swing, and there is every evidence that'the stabilizing .of business is an accomplished fact. The stability of business, caries with it the stability of prices, and, therefore", there should be no hesitation about stepping in 'and sailing ■ along -with the full "current of business, which' is now showing evidence of an-acceier: ated .flow after the, temporary lull during mid-summer months.' 'v Export buyers are at the present time very active in the. matter ot hardwoods, in the markets of both Canada and the United States. When it is' taken into consideration that Russia, which before the war supplied over 45 per cent, of the lumber used in the principal markets of Europe, .is now entirely out of this business and will not be a factor for severalvyears 'to come, it can be readily seen that the burden placed upon this country in supplying the European markets Is a serious one. Russia's annual -export of lumber before the war was approximately 7,00,- 00,000 feet. This, in addition to the very large quantity this country formerly shipped to Europe, must be made up on this side of. the water. And the making up of this trade balance, is a serious problem indeed with transportation conditions as they- are at present. This enormously increased foreign demand is already being felt, and by way of reflex action" has already tended to make various items of hardwoods scarce and some dealers predict u decided advance in prices. to continuity of supply. The nearness of these, road construction camps to the city tends to draw a class of workmen who are continually on the move. They go to a camp and get wofk for a few days, then return to the city to lay off and spend the money they earn; then off to another camp for another short period of work. ' * ' ' Work is now being pushed with grim earnestness on, the Peterson contract tion of ferry landings,at both Woodward's handing, and Ladner on the Fraser river. Bids will be .recetve'd up to noon of Monday, October 11, and plans and specifications may be obtained at the office of the district engineer, court house, Vancouver, or at the public works department, Victoria, The usuaL.ton per cent, deposit must accompany each tender. New ferry landings have been badly for the grading of a .section of the needed at both these places for some Pacific Plighway. Councillor J. Wise of Surrey,' even drove the grader for a spell on Friday during a temporary shortage of.men, just to help the good work along. Contractor Peterson believes he can finish the undertaking in 25 working days now, if he can get good weather that long. With the government .behind it, there-should be no, further delays in this contract. The M. P. Cotton Company have faced many unforseen difficulties.' They recently purchased a new mirer but it is ,not giving the satisfaction they expected of it. Mr. Cotton expects to complete his contract this fall,- if any kind of an-unbroken stretch of good weather favors the work. In the Harrison & Lamond contract for the paving of the road to Woodward's Landing, about fifty per' cent, of the contract is already- laid* while nearly the whole of the sub-grade is finished, despite the' handicap of wet weather. Four of .the five large culverts included in the contract have already been finished "and accepted* Jt>y the' government. "This firm has also added a new mixer to its equipment, the results.'from which will be watched with particular interest, as the ' mc- chine was built in Vancouver and much is expected of it by its makers. On the .Palmer Bros.' contract at Ladner, the concreting is expected to commence this-week. They have goqd hopes of being able to finish this season, as they are benefitting in their execution of the work by the costiy experiences of other' road contractors, and some of the difficulties they have had to overcome. Whatever the outcome of the present large contracts for concrete paving which have been awarded during the past summer as part of the government's road building programme, contractors are agreed on one thing, and that is that prices on next year's work will show a very material advance. The very higl? class of work demanded by the government inspectors, combined with the closeness with which the work is watched, makes it .necessary that no chances can be taken with any parf of the work. ' Whether o,r no all the present contracts cahibe finished before the'advent of the wet season makes further progress impossible, all depends on the weather now—and the contractors are hoping for the best. lar traffic acrss the Fraser river at this point. The landings in each case are'to be of the floating type secured by piles, as owing to the varying changes of water level due to both tides and the state of tho rivor, it is impracticable' to have a' fixed landing.
