The subject of adequate cemetery accommodation for this growing metropolis may not' be exactly the most cheerful one in the world, but it is a question which has to be faced in real j earnest by the city council and right at once. With the "Mountain View cemetery practically filled up now and even the five-acre addition south of the Wilson road which is now., being she has not only to provide ample burial space for her own dead, but also, as the price of her commanding position, many of those who die in other places adjacent to the city and who will naturally be brought here for burial. Whoh a cemetery tract is bought—and that must be soon—it will have to be selected with a view to providing accommodation for the next quarter of a century at least, allowing at the same time ample margin for the growth of greater Vancouver. ler, has been'instructed by his chief to notify mine operators that an increase in price of Co cents a ton at the mine will" be allowed. This increase is given because of the advance of 75 cents a day in wages which the workers will begin to receive on November 1. The increase in tire price of coal is the result of the increase in wages. It is realized in this connection by the majority of the aldermen—or at least Alderman Owen, chairman of the health committee and Dr. F. T. Underbill, city medical health officer, have been, trying to impress this point on the aldermen—that it is out of the Question now to have a -lot of little "jitney" cemeteries scattered around in the suburbs. In other words, it is no use purchasing any little thirty or forty-acre tracts as additions to either the present "cemetery or for new ones. What is needed is the purchase of a large tract of from 100 to 200: acres in an unbroken block, even if it is necessary to go some distance from the city to secure a tract of that description. Vancouver has to face the fact that in district, a jig and roll mill is being built at the Queen Bess. The manganese deposits at Cowich- an Lake, on Vancouver Island, are turning out well on development and recent sampling shows a higher'grade of ore than was originally reported. American interests, having in view an iron and steel industry in British Columbia, have been investigating the deposits. . PREDICT ADVANCE IN TRANSPACIFIC RATES Transpacific freight rates are due for a boost, according to traffic men engaged in Asiatic trade out of Seattle. The 'present lack of tonnage and ru^.'.' to get certain materials across, especially shipbuilding supplies, are responsible, it is said. These rates, it is predicted, will climb until tonnage is increased to Vladivostok and'other Asiatic points by direct lines. The rate on general commodities is now around $<10 to $45 per ton to Japan and a little more to China. It may advance to ■""GO. Steel and shipbuilding material are bringing a higher rate than general goods. There is no business in the flour.trade now,' exporters say,"in the Japanese or Chinese market. It is said than an inquiry on flour rates was made recently, with the result that flour was quoted at $-10. per ton. With the prevailing prices of flour here and the freight tacked on, the price of the cereal was out of reach of-the Asiatic consumer. Artistic Wire | & Iron Wks.
