VICTORIA—Through the Prince Rupert Provincial Land Office up to and Including September 30, the returns for which have" just been received by Hon. JT. D. Pattullo, Minister of Lands, the.first nine months of the year showed that no less a quantity than fifteen million feet of scaled logs had been recorded. While general development is obvious the heavy demand for aeroplane lumber this year has made a great deal of difference to this particular locality. VICTORIA—One, proof of the improved conditions in -Victoria, which have been .demonstrated in* increased bank clearings and ' a movement of residential property, is in the issuance of garage, permits for private owners. VANCOUVER—Archts. Gardiner & Mercer, Birks Bldg., are preparing plans for a one-story building, 75x120 feet, of hollow tile construction to be erected on the north-west corner of Granville and Pacific Sts., for Campbell and Trorey. Plans and specifications will be completed the early part of next week and tenders for the construction work will then be called for. When completed the building will be occupied by the Hill Tire Co. Ltd., and the Little Giant, Motor Truck Co.- The above architects also report that they are preparing plans for alterations to be made to the Royal Bunk Bldg., New Westminster, at a cost of about $1000. These plans will be ready for figuring about Nov. 12th. an ore smelting furnace probably in stalled. About 200 men are employed at the Granby smelter in Grand Forks. Several of them have been with the company from ten to nineteen years. At a public sale, W. T. Beck bought the San Poil group at Republic, Wash., which has shipped nearly 1000 tons of ore to Trail this year. The Noble Five mines, Slocan, have started a 1300 foot raise to connect with the upper workings. They are also blocking out large quantities of ore in anticipation of building a new concentrator at Cody next spring. The Surprise Mining Co. have resumed operations at the Ivanhoe mill and are building an addition to their storage bins on the old K. & S. track which will increase the capacity about 100 per cent. VANCOUVER—-After discussing at length the taxation act passed by the provincial government in May last, the legal and legislative bureau of the local Board of Trade decided this week to invite the government to send here the provincial expert on taxation in order to go thoroughly into the meaning' of the act before the members of the board. It had been practically decided to send a commit-j tee to Victoria, but in view of the great expense such a course would necessitate it was thought just as well to urge the premier and minister of finance to send the expert here. Last year 116,000 was voted in the way of assistance.' in the construction of hospitals. This year about $150,000 will probably be granted for that purpose. Grants to refuge homes, aid societies, etc, is increased from $19,000 to $8f.000. ' Among the appropriations in this year's estimates is a conditional one of $200,000 for the University of British Columbia. . Last year's estimate was $175,000.' ' Included in the works and buildings to be constructed by the Public Works Department are the following; Okalla prison farm, , $15,000; Improvement of government reserve, Burnaby, $10,000; mental hospital and •fiffiony farm. Point Grey gets $10,000 for roads, and Nicomen Island the same amount for dyking; $13,500 is a subsidy for the Ladner-Woodward ferry. The vote of $400,000 on last year's estimates for the Second Narrows bridge is left off. For bridges generally $450,- 000 is set down, while for the bridge over the Fraser River at Prince George there will be an appropriation, of $150,- 000. An item in the Land Department appropriations is that for $20,000 for ^timber testing and Investigation of wood products." An Indication that the government Intends to continue seeking overseas markets for the B. Date Issued | 1917-11-09 |
Description | The British Columbia Record was published in Vancouver, and ran from June 1916 to July 1922. The Record was published every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. As the official publication for the Architectural Institute of B.C., the B.C.
