It will be of tile construction on a concrete foundation and.a cement floor. The roof will be of mill construction, covered with three-inch splined planking and surfaced with lar and gravel. REMODEL ODD FELLOWS' BLOCK AT LADNER SOON LADNER, (Special)—The Royal .yank of Canada intends to enlarge its banking facilities here soon and with that object in view has purchased the Odd Fellows' block. It is intimated that the bank management will be making extensive improvements and alterations to the building soon to fit it-for enlarged banking premises. Mr. W. H. Mackenzie's store will also bo incorporated , in the enlargement of the bank premises. - Mr. Mackenzie also intends to build a new store shortly to take the place of the premises taken over by the bank. His new store will probably be uear the Odd Fellows block. Wr. Thomas Carson To Construct ;'. $20,000 Extension To Powell . The-figure submitted by Contractor Carson/ which was the lowest of a number of close bids, amoiyited to approximately $20,- 000. Mr. Carson intends to start work on the structure at once, and will probably get most of his matqriaUfrom the aniU at Powell River. . Tiie; addition is to*^o*1rr»me^construction on'a" con- crete'foundation. With the recent completion of twenty-one new cottages in^ the residential section of the model industrial town, and the occupation of these new homes by practically the same number of new families, "the .need .for increased school * accommodation became quite acute recently. It led to plans being hastily prepared and tenders called for the school addition which will do much to relieve the congestion that. prevails in the present overcrowded school building. POINT GREY STARTS SIX NEW HOMES DURING WEEK Building Inspector Fugler of Point Grey reports that twelve new permits were issued during the week ending November 11, which authorized construction of a total value of $33,035. Included in this list for the week were six new residences of an aggregate value of $29,500. The balance was made up of four gai-ages at $975, one addition costing $1,500, and one alteration costing $60.00. Point Grey officials believe that the municipality will again surpass the city this month in the total value of new residence construction. The applicant was Mr. H.. G. Grumplin who gftts a $3,500 loan and will erect a new homo in the east end. This loan was only made possible by the withdrawal of a previous applicant, as practically all of .the city's allocation was previously granted various applicants. This .will make a total of S5 houses erected in the city under the provisions of the Soldier Housing Act. A. E. FOREMAN RE-ENGAGED BY GOVT. I 1 THREE HUNDRED LIVES, 8000 | BUILDINGS IN CANADA'S ANNUAL FIRE TOLL Tho Department of Insurance at Ottawa has'issued a little booklet in which they tell us that every year In Canada we burn up a (town of 8,000 buildings, and destroy the lives of 300 persons in, the conflagration. When our Dominion's terrible fire waste is stated in terms of this kind, we begin .to realize that we have an enormously and costly. celebration of ovr carelessness every year. When the loss is stated as $85,000,000 we do not fully appreciate what the waste actually amounts to, simply because W1 most of us ,'do hot- realize 'what a million .dollars is, never having had siich a sum. " .' „ No person, especially In business, can afford to shut his eyes to the fil ever-present, possibility of tire, but «»« n, must .always be'villgant to see that every human precaution -is- taken Ho guard his own and his neighbors' pro- r-erty against "this'ruthless nori.-respec- ter of persons—the fire fiend. ' .Fire Insurance gives no more pro- 'tection against fire than does life insurance against death. Therefore, our responsibility to the community does cot erase when we have placed an insurance policy on our property to cover us "against mere monetary loss. We must, however, ascertain the Are hazard 'of everything around us and safeguard accordingly. The" rubbish piled in the backyard against that frame' building should be destroyed today. The 'litter In the cellar and jttlc should be' moved; today and not allowed' to again accumulate. (Continued from page 1.) the contractors had been favored with average weather during the progress^ of the work. But whea they experi: enced one of the worst two months of almost continual rain and the most unfavorable fall .seasons' for outside work that has occurred within the last thirty years, it was little wonder that the work tried the * patience of the residents waiting for the construction o£ these roads, to, say, nothing of the financial and engineering problems of the contractors themselves^ . For instance it, is, nbw..abundantly apparent that the concreting of the mile and a half stretch of the Ladner Trunk highway over Lulu .'island has opened the worst piece of. peat bog country to be found anywhere on the lower Mainland. This section of road has .been the cause of many a nightmare, to successive road inspectors. The concrete work on this section, which was carried out by Palmer Bros, of Vancouver, and completed on November 10, ranges from a thickness of 6% .inches on the flanks to- S inches in the centre. Cross draining and buttressing work is now being done. The mail coach from the Royal City should be rolling merrily along what will'be known as one of the .best pieces of thoroughfare to be found in the province not later than the middle of December. ... - - 62G Tender St. West Sey. 638S Too Much "Deadweight" is added to yoOr selling expenses )jy vour travellers' wasted calls.
