When our Dominion's terrible fire waste is stated in terms of this kind, we begin .to realize that we have an enormously and costly. celebration of ovr carelessness every year. When the loss is stated as $85,000,000 we do not fully appreciate what the waste actually amounts to, simply because W1 most of us ,'do hot- realize 'what a million .dollars is, never having had siich a sum. (Continued from page 1.) the contractors had been favored with average weather during the progress^ of the work. But whea they experi: enced one of the worst two months of almost continual rain and the most unfavorable fall .seasons' for outside work that has occurred within the last thirty years, it was little wonder that the work tried the * patience of the residents waiting for the construction o£ these roads, to, say, nothing of the financial and engineering problems of the contractors themselves^ . For instance it, is, nbw..abundantly apparent that the concreting of the mile and a half stretch of the Ladner Trunk highway over Lulu .'island has opened the worst piece of. peat bog country to be found anywhere on the lower Mainland. This section of road has .been the cause of many a nightmare, to successive road inspectors. The concrete work on this section, which was carried out by Palmer Bros, of Vancouver, and completed on November 10, ranges from a thickness of 6% .inches on the flanks to- S inches in the centre. Cross draining and buttressing work is now being done. The mail coach from the Royal City should be rolling merrily along what will'be known as one of the .best pieces of thoroughfare to be found in the province not later than the middle of December. ... - - 62G Tender St. West Sey. 638S Too Much "Deadweight" is added to yoOr selling expenses )jy vour travellers' wasted calls.
