Mere advertising of the advantages of home ownership,, or.the, loaning o£ ■sums to returned soldiers to build a few homes will not prove adequate in stimulating home building here unless supported by some definite plan. of financing these new homes and dwellings wMch are becoming so urgently needed. While there are scores of potential home own ere in the city living in rented houses—and ..complaining about the high rent they are paying—and at the same time maintaining expensive automobiles while the occasionally rent about the high cost of gasoline. It" is a rather pertinent fact that these motor car owners are in the majority of cases, not disposed to acquire homes because of their doubt as to their ability to finance them. According to one well known local contractor "who lias been delving into the situation with a view to embarking on-a house building programme on a considerable scale, the lack of finances < is a much larger factor in curtailing home-owning than is lack of desire, it is also a somewhat lamentable fact that the Board of Trade or some other local public body supposedly composed of far-sighted business men, have not apparently so far forseen what a draw> back this shortage of houses is going to be to Vancouver before many more months. Publicity and direct advertising, it is true, does create and increase the desire tor home ownership, but it too often finds and leaves the prospect without the means of gratifying it. The investment in a home is a larger one than the majority of workingmen or moderate salaried men ever made. Many of them haven't the cash to buy a lot, much less to put down an amount that will leave them with nothing but a first mortgage. , To increase the proportion of home owners requires that means be provided for helping prospects to help themselves. And when,.these-means come from a source in which inexperienced prospects may, place absolute confidence, they are more likely to overcome their reluctance to under- take such financial obligations. G. Gilbert and associates, taken on the 35th day of building operations-by the contractors, .Messrs., Turn bull & Curr. These thirty-five days also include tlie time required to raze the old buildings and clear the site. The picture shows the progress made up to last Tuesday, November 1.1. . : '--* </ LOCAL contractors and builders are watching .with, keen interest the progress being made in a race against time by Messrs. Turnbull A Curr, contractors, who have undertaken to complete, the erection of a block of seven stores at the corner, of Granville and Nelson streets in the record-time of •1 -1 days. Present indications of the progress made lead the enterprising contractors and their friends to believe that they AVill finish the job with perhaps a day or so to spare. The block of stores is I one story high, of brick construction i with .stone trimmings,.- and galvanized iron cornice,'all on a concrete founda-i 'tion. The block measures 75 by 120 feeti lh size. The five- stores fronting on j Granville, street will each be 15 by 72 feet while the two facing on' Nelson street will have an area of 20 by 50 feet ceach. It has been generally estimated that ordinarily, even in. good weather, this class' and size of building would take at least 60. days" to complete. Yet despite anything like even half decent building weather,..the contractors, have, made what is termed record progress on the job. especially when It is considered that the specified time of 44 days included the demolition of several old frame buildings on the property and the clearing of the site for• tne new building. The .splendid progress made in ' such record time is ascribed by. Messrs. Turn- bull A Curr to the systematized control which they exert over-all their building contracts. This systematized control,. they point out. also assures riot only rapid progress, but undoubtedly means financial returns to the owners, as they will' have their building '■ready tor tenancy a considerable time sooner than if the usual time was allowed for construction. ■'■■■' ....■•■■ Mr. T.
