I missioned to prepare the plans for the' • extensive alterations to be made to a portion of the ground floor.-of the Granville Mansions at the corner of Robson and Granville streets, to fit for occupation by the Canadian Bank of Commerce as a branch bank. The new .branch bank is to be located on the Robson street frontage, just west of Lyle Fraser's premises, and considerable alterations will bo required to the front as well as the installation of lai-ge vaults and the usual' bank fittings for the interior. Tenders for these interior fittings are to be called shortly so that there will be no delay in installation, ns the successful contractor will be expected to have them ready to install about the middle of January, TO REGRADE^PARK ENTRANCE 'Workmen from "the city engineer's department will start work at once on chp grading down of. the small hill at the entrance to Stanley"Park at the north end of the Coal Harbor Causeway. The British Columbia Record is the official orran of The Architectural Institute oV British Columbia, federated with The Roval Architectural Institute of Canada and as such is usedI by them as the medium through which tc make, Jwrtr official announcements to the genera, public. _ , By such selection the British Columbia Kecord Is no wise pledged to editorialsupport of any policy advanced or tnese societies, but maintains.oni ab- tolutelv independent position on all matters subject, to editorial opinion- PIONEER BUILDERS ADOPTED MANY BUILDING TERMS FROM NATURE Many of the terms employed by even the most modern of builders are of some considerable age, and originated in olden' times when large cities did not exist. Then the workmen employed on .buildings lived in close touch with nature, and, having to make their own details of construction, naturally turned to account many of the forms around them, at the same following the names ready to hand. . , When building was of a rougher kind, and unwork'ed pieces of timber were used in house building, naturally the word tree would come to be used for any" piece of timber, henee we find "roof-tree," "gantry" and so on. Then .crooked pieces used in half timber work were called "knees." This word suggested "kneelers" as applied to' solid pieces of coping used to give bend and support "the; gabies.' "Threshold" calls to mind the time when thrashing was performed at the house door. ' Birds evidently must .have been favorites with the old workmen, for we find the "bird's-mouth" used for a particular cut in woodwork as well as "feathered" for another frequent form of'-cut. Then^ there is the still universally used "wing" of a house»or building, and one thing is "tailed" into another, and a much used joint^n all fprms of box-making is known -as' a "dovetail." The farm yard ■ comes in strongly too, to supply a few terms, such1 as j "bullnosed" in bricks, and" also "frog"' in the same material of building construction. "Dog's .Hind Leg" is often used as an uncomplimentary description of crooked work or an awkward acaircase. In walling; the expression "toe," "'"footing," "heel," and other frequent ..references to the human body comes in, not to mention a "squint" quoin. Trees appear again as "leaves" in folding doors. Inanv imate nature turns "up in roofing, as "ridge" , and "valley." Some terms have become distorted into nature, as "dragging tie" into "dragon tie" or "rebate" into" "rabbit." Even tools get some of their names from, the familiar objects of country life. The joiner uses a "plough" and often forms a "lamb's tongue" moulding. A "swan's neck" bend Is to be found in the pipes used to convey water from the roof to the ground, as well as a '•head" and "foot." A "mouse is turned to account in threading a sash cord, and is not a stair tread "nosed?" Many of these expressions show- more than a casual acquaintance with nature, so that one might easily think that the worker of those days, in cases at least, not only built houses, but performed agricultural duties. At any rate, they saw a good more of the country than the present-day workmen do. Only a few terms that come to mind have been mentioned, but enough- have been given, to draw attention to a very interesting subject which the reader can easily elaborate for himself. (Continued from page 1.) local electrical firms who have thus contracted for all available space at tho coming electrical show. The booths will be of frame construction finished with building paper and then kalsomined to a pleasing color scheme. This is a.new idea for a show of this kind and it is expected the resuls will prove very striking and satisfactory, especially' when combined with the elaborate scheme of decoration and illuminatidn that has been prepared for Vancouver's first big electrical show. Architect Benzie , and Contractor Chrystal will get possession of the Drill Hall on November IS. To meet their expectations of having the alterations to the interior all complete and the exhibits in place for the formal opening on the morning of Monday, November 22, some extremely rapid work will be required. The British Columbia Electrical Co-Opera- tive Association, .under whose auspices the show is being held, are making every effort to make the show a notable success. Peterson & Company, have met with so many delays—not the least j of which was the unprecedented spell o£ wet weat!.er this fall—was finally completed yesterday. It would have been finished on' Wednesday but for an accident to the mixer which held up work for several hours and delayed ths final few yards of the job until yesterday. The newly paved portion will not be opened for traffic for another HO days yet. as that time will he required for the cement to set and^ harden sufficiently Cor u^e. * On the section of the Pacific Highway further south, Mr. ..Miles P.
