VANCOUVER—Lumber trade in British Columbia continues steady to quiet with output below normal capacity, according to millowners and dealers. Shipbuilding contracts and the usual eastern demand for large timbers are the chief factors in the situation. Demand from the prairies is expected to revive after the first of the year. The log supply is reported about equal to demand, but any increase in log requirements, it is said, would be difficult to meet owing to the labor shortage, 3,200 British Columbia loggers having enlisted since the start of the war. Figures are not yet available as to the number of loggers who will be affected by the Military Service Act, but it is said that the majority of those left in the province are over the age limit for service. VANCOUVER—Hanbury & Co., on Tuesday presented to the civic board of works a bill for $309.75 for repairs done to the.portion of Fourth avenue, which lies east of the Granville street | bridge. In communications to the city engineer's' department the firm pointed out that they had requested that this roadway be repaired and tlie department not having attended j to the matter they had done so themselves. The board declined ta recommend payment of the account on the ground that it would create an undesirable precedent. BURNABY — Estimates submitted for the Burnaby water department at the committee meeting of the council, for the two weeks beginning November 19th, were as folows: General maintenance $150; pumping North Burnaby and Patterson, $56; inspection $39. Totalling $245. Sey. 6411 - VICTORIA — Of all the shipyards building wooden hulls on1 the British Columbia coast, apparently the only real rival to the two Victoria' plants is the Western Canada Shipyards, Ltd., of Vancouver, which concern has a contract for-six vessels. It ,is reported from the Mainland that the management of the Western Canada Shipyards figures on putting Hull No. 3 4 into the water by the "middle of next "month, providing the weather conditions in .the meantime are favorable." This announcement, coupled with rthe recent report, to the effect that the Cameron-Genoa Mills Shipbuilders, Ltd., would have Hull No. 6 ready for launching about the middle of, December, serve's 'to increase the" interest and friendly; rivalry which'.exists- between the British Columbia" yards for ■ the horfor of launching* \he\ -first hull under'^ the programme , which' provides for' the construction of, twenty-seven ships. The only'otheficontender is the L'y- all Shipbuilding' Company,' of''North' Vancouver, the "first ;huir at this plant being almost as far advanced as' that at the Western Canada Shipyards. At the latter yard the ceiling of Hull No. 14 has been finished, and the planking is nearly completed. The main deck is-'about complete, and ax-good start has been made' on the poop deck. There is a great deal of fitting to be { done inside, but this is not expected to interfere with an early' launching. j As regards weather conditions the [ Victoria yards have a big advantage over the Vancouver plants. j The planking on Hull1 No. 6 at the Cameron-Genoa yards is now com- ; plete, with the exception of the bulwark planking. The ceiling was completed some time ago and otlier interior and deck work is well advanced. Another week should see the seams caulked and the hull treated with composition, and from that stage the hull will be ready for launching whenever it is considered advisable to do so. Hull No. 1 at the Foundation Company's yard is coming along fast and the first launching at the Point Hope plant is expected to take place before Christmas. No names have yet been chosen for the vessels, and from information secured about the yards it would seem that for the present at least no names fwill be given the ships. It is not improbable that during the period of the war they will be known by numbers. ■ : <.. Buildings, together with three cottages on the University Site, Point Grey.
