PRESENT OUTLOOK PROMISES AMPLE STABILITY IN: ALL LINES ^Notwithstanding the contusion and uncertainty born of the' present pro; cess of re-adjustment necessitated by impending price reductions, there are apparent on all sides of trade and commerce, industry and building activity indications of ample stability. The recent changes in price in some lines of the. necessities of life have had the effect of making business men and bankers somewhat cautious about future commitments. v Accordingly, business is now.being done on a somewhat shorter term . credit. basis than perhaps is normal. If the- consumers, including the contractors.and builders as well as those who deal in other commodities outside of the building trade, on their side, exercise cqrres;' yondence prudence in appreciating the economic signs of times, business stability will pursue an even course. The consumers "in ordinary commercial life may be regarded*as-occupying a happier "position «it the moment than' the retailers, for while the situation of the latter is rendered somewhat difficult by the fact that so many of them have on hand-large stocks that were purchased at high figures, the reductions in, the prices charged by important wholesalers in different parts of the country, are trending to .transfer the benefits from manufacturers directly'and at once to the consumers, to the retailers' loss. This would seem to be inevitable. ' In the case of builders and contractors, the majority of them—as far as the local situation Is concerned—are still twixt the devil arid the deep sea in the matter of material costs. There are persistent rumors of price reductions in building-materials, but so far they have only turned out to be rum? ors, with the possible • exception of lumber prices. But these persistent rumors have tended to prevent many owners who would otherwise by this time have made up. their minds to proceed with some building job, to postpone it until 'next spring in the vain hope that material prices may take a drop by that time. Some danger may" develop in the present situation in commodities if the consumers exaggerate the downward tendency and hold back their purchases unduly in the hope that there will be a tobaggon slide in prices, when the general advantage ■would be definite, because- more durable, if the change is gradual and consistent. The present appreciable induction in the cost of living is bound to have this result; it will alleviate these- discordant conditions in the- labor world which ever and anon have threatened disturbances which in their effects would revenge their misfortunes on the heads of everybody; and most of all—if they but knew itch the laborers'. On the whole, the present position seems eminently sound. The outlook is'brighter, especially for B. C, and the times are golden .in opportunity—if practices J. p. HODGSON A. M. »K-i ■ C r. T. The Lever-West Gas Improvement Company, of Manchester, England, which has the general contract for erecting the retorts, will start work about the middle of January on their part of the undertaking. CREDITORS WILL TAKE ; OVER Y. M. C. A. BUILDING There being no chance to raise sufficient funds for the completion of the, unfinished Y. v M. C. A. building on Georgia street, arrangements are being made by the directorate of the Y. M. C. A. to turn the building as it stands, over to the creditors. Just v/hat the creditors will do with the structure has not ,yet been decided but a meeting is'to. be held shortly at which it is probable some arrangement will be made to dispose of the building at the best figure possible. In any event the creditors plan_ to become active in the matter and do not intend to allow the building to remain on their hands any longer than possible, as they consider that much time has been wasted already. The work already done on the building is valued at $180,916, of which sum 5141,812 is still owing to the contractors. It has been estimated that to FRAME SCHOOL TO BE BUILT AT KILGARD VICTORIA—Kids -are being asked by tho Provincial Government for the construction of a one-roomed frame, schoolhouse at Kilgard, .near Sumas. The need of a school in the, Kilgurd district has been apparent for some time and the Government architect was instructed to prepare plans for a suitable frame building. These plans are now ready and tenders are being called by the Provincial Department of Public Works. It is estimated that the school building will cost between $5,000 and $6,000. Date Issued | 1920-11-15 |
Description | The British Columbia Record was published in Vancouver, and ran from June 1916 to July 1922. The Record was published every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. As the official publication for the Architectural Institute of B.C., the B.C. The Record was published by the Record Publishing Company, which had previously published the paper under a number of different titles, including the Daily Building Record and the British Columbia Building Record. The Record subsequently evolved into the Journal of Commerce. |
