Present  conditions  have also  necessitated  more and largei  hospitals,  the"result   being  a«   unusually   large Jnciease  '    for   hospitals  and   cnarities.    Last  year  $16,000 was voted in the way of assistance   in   the   construction   of   hospitals  This   year   about   $150,000  will   probably  be granted for that puipose.    Grants to  refuge  homes,   aid   societies,   etc,   is   increased fiom  $19,000  to  $80,000.  University of B, C.  Among   the     appiopriations      in    this  year's estimates is  a conditional one of  $200,000   for   the   Unhersity   of   British  Columbia.       Last   year's   estimate   was  $175,000.'       Included   in   the   works   an.I  buildings to be constructed by the Public   Works   Department   are   the clollow-  ing;    NOkalla      prison      farm,      $15,000;  improvement    of    government    reseive,  Burnaby,   $10,000;    mental   hospital   and  colony'farm,  Essondale,  $35,000; provincial government buildings, London  foom-  pletion     and     maintenance).-     $175,000,  maintenance, $8,000.    The appropriations  provincial     normal     school,     Vancouver.  for roads  .streets,  bridges and   wharves  tn   each   constituency   are ,the   same   as  last    year.       Chilliwack     gets     $33,300;  Delta,    $22,500;   Dewdney,    $6S,500,    and  Richmond   $10,000.    Eifrhty   thousand   is  revoted tor Kmgsway through the Municipality   of   Burnaby     Point   Grey   gets  $10,000   for   roads,   and   Nicomen   Island  the same amount for dyking; $13,500 is a  subsidy for the\Ladner-Woodward ferry.  The   vote   of   $400,000   on   last   year's  estimates for the Second Narrows biidge  is left on*.    For bridges  generally  $150,-  W)0   is* set   down,   while   for   the  biidge  over  the Fraser River at Prince Geoige  there  will  be an  appropriation  oC  $150,-  000.  An Item In the Land Department appropriations is that for $20,000 for  "timber testing and investigation of  wood products." An indication that the  government Intends to continue seeking  overseas markets for the B. C. lumber  trade is that another $50,000 is appropriated for salaries, travelling expenses,  and purchase ot material  Other Appropriations.  Among   the   other   appropriations   are  tlie   following:  Grant to B. C. regiments $5,000, grant  to patriotic fund $6,000, giant to boy  scouts $1,000.
