The British Columbia Record Is the «aQcial organ of The Architectural Institute of British Columbia, federated with Ttw Royal Architectural Institute of Canada And as such is used by them as the medium through which to make their asWrlnl announcements to the general public By such selection the British Columbia Record is.no wise pledged to editorial support of. any policy advanced by these societies, but maintains an absolutely independent position on all mat- Can subject to editorial-opinion.: ACTION, NOT WORDS, NEEDED ^n NOW ON WAR MEMORIAL, A:: *'i.E§T WE FORGET." 3t is Tiigh time that some definite line of action that will produce results, instead of delays and postponements, should be adopted that will jniOTide Vancouver with a proper memorial to those of its sons who fell in the great war. So far,' the tangible results of a lot of talk-has.only cry- metallized in one meeting at which a lot more talk was spilled but nothing definite in the way of action achieved. "We may be neai-er to the accomplishment of something tangible that we "were a year ago, but if w.e are the ajverage man in the street is not aware of it. Far less prosperous communities in all parts of the Dominion Tiave already erected their monuments, .auditoriums, community centres or 'laid out their parks to commemorate' the deeds of those sleeping in foreign * lands. We appreciate the fact that we ; haTe had a surplus of drives, tag-days .and campaigns of various sorts and the raising of a huge sum, of money at this time may not be feasible and we -'are mot convinced that it, is . entirely xecessary, but we are sure it is time '■we "were getting our war memorial be- ryandthe discussion stage. ,.i "We are getting too prone■-.to forget 'and to postpone. : This does not ap- ;;ply to Vancouver more than to other Canadian .cities, but as' a people we ; tare getting somewhat like the Ameri- "cans—too inclined to thing of memorials in terms of dollars and'cents and 'to .^believe that we should have some- •■rf/fldng.massive and awe inspiring. This =we do not particularly need...If funds •are available, or can, without detact- ing from the purose and. sentiment of .the memorial, be made available, then b jaaore or less expensive mark of res- .'pect would not be amiss. But let us tnot make it a hardship financially to v'JBie extent of detracting in any way irova the sentiment which must be associated with the movement. .Vancouver is fortunate in one respect, and that is having a most magnificent and centrally located site for a 'war memorial, which, under the terms of the grant to the city, cannot be used 'for any other purpose. Let us, however, not delay longer than necessary, the erection and dedication of a suit- • able memorial which will cause us to remember as often as possible the ■debt we owe to those boys for whom "'taps" sounded in blood-drenched Vimy Ridge or other of the notable >engagements in which they brought Euch imperishable honor to Canadian firms, when Canada's sons moved forward in the most glorious, offensive lor the good of man that the world has <ever known. "Get money honestly if you can; but by all means, get money," seems to be the new adaption of the old saying. The whole world is running a race 'for riches, while with all his swollen earnings, the average man has more difficulty than ever in making ends meet.
