And things are ^getting so serious in the matter of housing accommodation in Vancouver, "that if the influx continues all summer and fall, there may be rent strikes _ere before next May Day rolls round again. Thousands of families in Chicago "went on a "rent strike" on May 1 and refused to vacate their apartments in accordance with May Day moving orders. In a majority of instances, of -course, these controversies will be settled by arbitration; but others will be carried to the cofcrts and the Chicago Tenants' Protec_rfcj,Association has 'been organized to fight these cases. The housing problem. is one of the _aost acute at the present moment for jsractically all communities in Can- <_da and the United States. Cities -^have grown tremendously since 1914. _»nring that period there has been either very limited and in some com- j_u_ities, practically no construction. .__ a result, nearly every progressive —i——cipality or community in the ".Dominion is ~ underbuilt. In some places the insufficiency of accommo- . <—rtJons has reached.extraordinary pro- TJOTtions. Most serious phase, of-the situation • 1a llie refusal of property owners in __uty* places to build. Labor is de- ___tding unusually high wages, materials are higher and* incidental costs - _re greater. Equally serious is the • restriction on output imposed by some _uort-sighted unions in eastern cities. One desirable result, - however, - is flowing from this housing shortage. Difficulty in renting is forcing numbers of persons to buy who otherwise would not invest in homes, Builders wfll put up houses for sale where they •will not put them up as an investment. •However as usual, there are numbers of persons, particularly in the larger cities, who will not subject themselves *o the discomfort of residing in the •suburbs and who are unable to 'pay Sot a home close in. Upon them falls 'the chief burden of the conditions resulting from the unprecedented shortage of housing accommodations. BIG PAVING CONTRACT AWARDED TO COTTON CO. Marking the award of, about the largest single paving contract that has been let so far this year, Hon. J. H. King, Minister of. public works, announces that the successful tenderers for some 2 1/3 miles Of additional concrete paving on the Pacific Highway is 'the Cotton Company, Limited, of Vancouver. This -rm's bid was the lowest received by the.department and runs close to $120,000 for the completed work. This additional paving job which will keep the contracting firm busy for the, greater part of the summer, will carry the concrete paving of this much-travelled highway from its present terminus at Peterson/ right through the long, scenic stretch of the "green timber" to the Johnston Road. The specifications call for a very substantial form of concrete paving with an asphalt surface. The Cotton Company intends* to begin assembling material at once and will take advantage of the summer weather to rush the work to completion. '■', 24—S.
