This was the highest figure reached in the United States, although in Canada, the figure went somewhat 'higher. The price level iii Canada, according to the Canadian Labor Department, reached the high-point in November, the price then being 115% time later than June,. .1918, but the' index figure as published by the Statisque Generate • for May showed an increase of 235% over the 1913 price level. Not only do the countries nearer the scene of actual warfare show greater increases in the price level, but it is also true that in these countries the price began to rise at an earlier date than they did in either Canada or the United States. $53,000 FOR OBSERVATORY. In Canada, the average amount of money in circulation per effcita in the year 19.13 was $34.65, and in the United States slightly more. It has been ascertained that these Svoods, in the best qualities, can be laid down here at from $70 to $100 per thousand feet, and that it can be retailed for as high as $300 per thousand feet. If made into furniture it would bring an even.,;]iigher return still, and as there is a' large, maret for antique and the better class of furniture made from these woods, the erection of such a factory would soon develop, it is believed, into a large industry employing many expert workmen. Many brick and ce- meut mills closed down for sometime are gradually being started-, up. Urifiic production is twenty-five per cent, of normal and cement about VICTORY BONDS BOUGHT and SOLD Transact your bond business through a long established and thoroughly organized concern. Ceperley, Rounsefell & Co. ESTABLISHED IB 1886 forty-five per cent. Cement producers are building high hopes on the demand for their product to caused by road building which is contemplated.. There does not seem to be any expectation of lower prices in these commodities. .',, Paint.—The outlook for paint sales is for an increase of anywhere from fifteen to twenty-five per cent, during the next four or five months over the same period of last year. The increase in the use of paint probably will be greater than last year. The increase in actual building owing to clean-up and paint-up campaigns. ,,- The actually advanced cost of paint itself does not cut proportionately as much figure , as might be imagined, for the great expense is that of labor. Some ingredients of paint like lead and zinc, have declined in price, but linseed oil still is high. There is no general expectation of a reduction in the price of paint. VANCOUVEB, B. C. . The "tract on which this garden city development is to be carried out comprises one of the most desirable suburban residential locations in- Greater Vancouver. It is imediately adjacent to the .fashionable Shaughnessy Heights district and comprises some 53 acres bounded on the east by Granville street, ,on the west by Angus road. The site has an average elevation above sea level of from 390 to 400' feet, and besides having an unobstructed and fine view of mountain and, sea, has also the advantage of' being within two blocks of a good street, car service, and one of the main paved thoroughfares. I Excavation work has been commenced for the first houses which will occupy the section of the tract facing on Whitehead road and Angus road, being the most desirable, or northwest corner of the tract. It is planned to erect' between a dozen and ■ twenty strictly modern, six and seven roomed houses on this property. The houses will in general follow the Colonial cottage type— a type that is almost unknown in the City,, but which lends itself admirably to -well-planned residential districts. None of the lots on which the model homes are to be erected will have less than 70 feet frontage, and some will go to 100 feet. All streets in the tract will be paved and boulevarded, and after the houses are finished, lawns will be levelled, graded and seeded—even ornamntal shrubbery and good-sized trees will be planted next fall so that by this time next year there will be quite a sized addition to the residential tracts in that district, all finished in a model manner and with all due regard for landscape .effect as well as providing all modern conveni-. ences. Included "in the selling price of each house will be the services of an expert gardener who for one year) from the date on which the houses are occupiech will be responsible for the upkeep and care of the boulevards, streets and lawns. Each ifouse and lot with its complete development, down to everything but the actual furniture there-, in, . will cost the purchaser from .$o,900 to $6.S00. ..'The-terms will be exceptionally easy, comprising one- third - cash and the balance spread over a period of six years. It is understood that the financial success of the first unit of the scheme is already practically assured, as the majority of the houses have already been purchased and applications for the balance will be considered in the order received.
