The award of the contract is announced by Architect J. E. Parr, Carter-Cotton building, who prepared tlie plans and is supervising the erection of the new' factory. WILL AWARD CONTRACT SOON FOR FINE HOME Plans have been prepared by Architect H. H. Gillingham, 1502 Tower control 1S5 feet frontage, or about half of the block between Abbott and Cambie streets. The price paid for the Harvey store and premises is stated to be 3140,000, which is conceded to be a pretty fair bargain for such desirable Hastings street realty. As the lease of the present Harvey premises runs until next January, the prevously arranged bujlding programme of the Woodward firm has been considerably altered. "It was .originally intended to have commenced the erection of a six or eight story, building uniform with the present department store at the corner of> Abbott and Hastings street, some time this summer. The building programme called for an expenditure of about $400,000 on the construction of this new building. But with the acquisition of the additional frontage comprised in the Harvey store, the necessity for a complete revision of the original plans, combined with the present high prices of building materials, combined with the uncertainty that exists in the labor market, the firm has decided to defer the start on its building programme until next spring. It was stated to The Record by a member of the Woodward firm that it is planned to start early in the spring of-1921 on the demolition of the'building now occuping the. Hastingt street frontage from the department, store to the westerly limit of the Harvey store. Meanwhile plans are to be prepared for a six or eight story building that will occupy that entire frontage and will probably close to $1,000,- 000. At a figure that is said to approximate $300,000, the-B. C. The award of the contract was made by Capt. J. VANCOUVER SOUTH VANCOUVER — Assurance of a considerable - improvement in South Vancouver roads during the coming summer is promised as a result of a lengthy conference between Hon. Dr. J. H. King, minister of public works, A: E. Foreman, government engineer and Commissioner, F.> J. Gillespie, during which the minister of public works undertook to provide $25,000 for road improvement in the municipality this summer., Of this amount the municipality will repay to the government out of next year's receipts $8,000. v . This $25,00 will provide for the hard surfacing of Marine Drive for the entire width of the municipality, extending from the Burnaby boundary to that of"Point Grey, thus linking up this fine highway with the other sections and providing an excellent trunk road. This item alone, is estimated to cost $16,000, and Hon. Dr. King intimated^ that work would be started'at once. Another item of $4,000 was remarked for the repair.by the municipality of the Vivian creek bridge on Marine Drive. Fraser street paving will also be repaired by the municipality at a cost of $1,000, while necessary repairs to the paving on Kingsway will also be made, the government paying 75 per cent, of the cost, and the remaining 25 per cent, will be paid' to the government by the municipality next year.
