WEST Good Eats BUILDING AND INDUSTRIAL NEWS INSURANCE IN ALL ITS BRANCHES "The Good Food Restaurants" has augmented a housing shortage which had already became acute through suspension of huilding operations during the war and long- drawn builders' contracts. It is feared that there will be much suffering as well as congestion during the com ing winter. time ago with practically' through communication,;aiow for the transport of rails and supplies, it is expected that the track laying through to the canyon crossing of the Cowlchan river will be completed in a fortnight now. When, the track-laying gangs get to that point, further progress on the steel will have to be suspended for probably two months until the bridge over the Cowichan river is completed. CO-OPERATION MAY SOLVE CHICAGO'S HOUSING PROBLEM Chicago is now attempting to pre- "'"fent rent profiteering by regulating 'increases in rates and by organizing .-«. hundred million dollar corporation to "build ■ homes and sell them on easy "payments. Meanwhile Chicago's flat -yflwellers have, been forming unions to ^nge war on alleged profiteering land- -'-JortB, and committees in the city council liave bedh investigating; increases ijn Tents ranging up to 100 and even ito 200 per cent.' Several hundred families have solv- -«d individual ^housing problems by snaking their homes in houseboats aaoored in the branches of the Chicago .Tiwer, the Calumet and the lakes in "eonth Chicago. Once in possession of .-& "houseboat, the owner has only to —;p«y ^l a month for the privelege of "■mooring his craft: If he does not like- •iis location he can move his home- 3mat elsewhere. This is a very ad- -'vvitageous arrangement, especially "when one has objectionable neighbors. '~-3fay of these boats cost $1,000 and -$2«200 each and have five rooms, par- *■, fining room, kitchen and two bed- rrooms. In some cases again, groups ■flafE tenants have solved the rent prob- /lem Jry forming co-operative company's* and buying the apartment houses 4a *which they live. The Housing Corporation which has 'ibeen "financed -by banks and business- •*Wuui, has under consideration a plan -*• Imild a row of model homes in ACtmnt Park, on the lake front. Examples of many types of standardized ^fcwaes would be erected,,furnished and • surrounded by settings and trees and shrubbery, so that a prospective purchaser of a new home could look over «•'the styles before placing his order. ^Attempts have been made to check ".Tent profiteering by co-operation of 'the city council and the city realty .Aboard which investigated complaints -.and when increases were found to be -* excessive, advised the landlord to ■withdraw his demands.' In general -Ihe investigators have allowed an in- ■crease of about 30 per cent, over last yeaT's rentals. A proposal was made to erect scores of portable houses, but the Carpenters* and other allied unions declared 'their opposition to that plan, even if • "the houses came from union factories. Practically the entire Interior arrangements of the old jail have been torn out, leaving everything ready for a start on the remodelling. Owing to the somewhat complex nature of the new work it is the intention of the school board to do it practically all by day labor under the supervision of an expert construction foreman -who is to be appointed^ very shortly by a special committee named for that purpose. It' is 'probable .that the electric installation and the plumbing will be the only sub-trades awarded by contract. - of the city's allocation.
