One may enter a building and at first glance/consider it clean and sanitary. But a little cleaner applied to a door reveals dirt and dust—both unsanitary. It is well, therefore,.to use finishes which can be easily cleaned. This saves the recurrent expense of redecorating, and gives a periodical freshness to homes and offices. Mr. Wm. Frederick Gardiner plans to visit Courtenay and Duncan during this'week on a business trip in connection with some construction jobs there. , , PAINTING AN ASSET IN BEAUTY, V. a .SANITATION AND -J3* PRESERVATION " A. greater interest , in Paint -painting is being evidenced each day, •'mod those interested in the mierchan- 4Hx4ng of the decorative idea are selling painting rather than paint. Of course, building managers and property owners actually buy cans or ^barrels of paint orJ^arnish, selecting 'from the great array ?6f colors shown •on the average chart, .and often buy ■maty old color with definite recommen- idations for service, and as a rule purchase at the lowest price—or perhaps ■some advertisement has made a Hefi- Jiite-impression with thern which predisposes the buyer in favor of certain ■trade-mark materials. But there is -jnuch more to painting than there is to paint. * Paint is merely a means to an end. "Tests have shown that a floor which Jas been properly varnished from time to time, lasts six and one-half 'thanes as long as a' flooring which has "been left unprotected. The same applies to the trim in buildings. You taiow how it is if a bit of .plaster is chipped out and does not receive pro- .per attention. Soon the cracks lengthen and spread. Before long a -big piece of the plaster falls down, entailing expense which could have "been avoided.4 You know the old saying: "A stitch in time saves nine." The bests paints in these days have ■a sanitary feature which is not to be -•overlooked. There are certain wall finishes which contain an odorless disinfectant which is death to the average germ—that is, if they are stirred flip in the dust or are in the air, they immediately die upon coming in con- •tact with these wall finishes. There "are also certain varnishes, glass 'enamels, etc., which tend to shed the ■flirt and are easily washed. This Tactor is an aid in keeping rooms in a SO. VANCOUVER PERMITS 3702—C. H. BRITISH COLUMBIA RECORD HUDSON'S BAY COMPANY PLANS BIG BUILDING PROGRAMME FOR NEXT YEAR 3 aaH ipiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiuiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiniiM fMt*HhHIMMfMtfn*inmtiimtNiMinnmrninninHMHnmTn!T7inTnn HERE is about what the northeast corner of Granville and Georgia street, .will look like when the present building on that site occupied hy the Hudson's Bay Company, .is razed and a new si.x-story structure uniform ■with the company's new "Seymour stceet wing, is erected there making the whole end of" the', block uniform. •It will not be commenced this year, according to announcement by officials of Canada's oldest and biggest C'p.in- snercial concern. For with the obser- ■vance in a fitting manner of the 2f>0th anniversary of the founding of the company, and the holding of, tlie mbn- ■ster pageant, which is to mark that historic birthday as far as Vancouver is 'concerned, the officials of the com pany will be: too busy to think of; commencing any building extensions this year. Besides, the company's building programme for this year has been mapped out as comprising the conir, pletion .of the firm's big stores in Victoria, which is quite an ambitious un-i dortaking' in itself in these times of high building costs. Behind the purchase some time ago; of the New York block, adjoining the; company's Granville street frontage, lies the first move in what will: be ultimately an extensive building programme for Vancouver. Unless present-'plan's miscarry, it is probable that possession will be taken of the New York block late '-.this fall and arrangements made to fit these quarters up for occupation by some of the big store's many departments that will be moved in there out of the present building at the corner of Granville and Georgia. That will allow that structure to be razed probably next spring to make way for a large and mere modern one possibly: a couple, of stories higher than the fine building- completed a couple of years ago on the Georgia-Seymour frontage. Then, ^still later, when those new premises are occupied, the temporary quarters in the New ■York;'.block.- can; be vacated and that structure; also sions northward on Granville of a type razed to make way for further exten- Jthat will be in keeping with the ideals and progressive methods of this ancient but vigorously active concern. Of late years some who have e-vani- ined the pyramids have come to the conclusion that the stones are artificial, a kind of concrete. If so they were probably made where they are, and the sand of the desert was the principal material used. BUSINESS MEN will find the Cafe an ideal meeting place for the Luncheon Hour.'
