VANCOUVBR.B.C 10} W- GARAGE REGULATIONS ARE MADE MORE STRICT As predicted in these columns some Hime ago, the city has at-last taken -cognizance of the growing menace and increasing fire risk through the ~£reat increase in the number of small Swages in the more thickly settled ^residential districts and passed an •amendment to the city's garage *by- 3aw, which has made the regulations governing the erection-1 ofithis class of wutbuildings in future much more .strict. The practice with the average householder in the past has been to 3>ut the little frame garage to house the family fliver right in a corner of *he lot, preferably on the back end* -fronting on the lane. Very often the "aext-door neighbor, when he acquires '=a family fliver, does exactly tke same Tttiing and as a result the two garages adjoin. If a blaze should start in one owing tov a back-fire from' a carbure- ■ Jtor or a isatch carelessly dropped on ^•fi* oil-soaked floor, it.' would be al-; '/*.'^most"sure -v-to communicate-to -the ad- ;:| joining garage; and two garages make * finite a blaze—one that could very ■::^-;jeasfly spread to residences if they ' "liappen to be very close. :■; ■;;:•.'.",'•'"With the object of obviating just : aracta. conditions the. amendment to ■ ;^tke garage bylaw, which has been pas- '■;;--;;:_wd and is now in force,^procides that ^aai garages built to accommodate not . anore than two cars, or one car and* .motorcycle, shall not be" located nearer than 3 feet, 6 inches' from the boundary line of the lot. ad Joining and ••t less than ten feet from any adjoining building. The object in the latter provision of course, is to create at fire break of at least seven feet "between such structures. The amended, bylaw, also provides that in cases of private garages holding from, three to six cars, all posts -or supports of such"building must be at least 14 inches square of solid wood, so as to provide slow-burning material, and the outside of the structure must be covered with galvanized iron or other incombustible material. Another important provision in these jjrivate garages which house three to Jdx cars is that they must have con- -crete floors. The same regulations ^pertaining to keeping the" building at least 3 feet, 6 inches from the bound- Jay line of the lot also apply to pri- - Tate garages intended to house from three to six cars. The need of some such regulations -was becoming quite obvious to every- •tme who has kept track of the num ber of these private garages built in his own residential neighborhood. It is doubtful if there is another city in Western Canada, or in the entire Do- mnion for that matter, which, is so well supplied with garages, both public and private, as the city now possesses. The small, private garage especially, has been built at the rate of better than one per day during a year past.
