These will be the first ovens of-their kind in this part of the country. Instead of allowing all the gases and distillates to escape to the open air, these ovens will collect them. The company has already secured a market for these by-products and expects to supply the whole of the Pacific Coast markets with ammonia and the bases for dyes. While the company is unable to commit itself, it is believed that the by-, . ling with the bridge unless it vvere reconstructed from end to end, as the rebuilding of the j Rock Bay bridge 'and opening it to trailic. Tlie city engineer estimated the approximate cost of making the proposed repairs with a seventy-foot, span and fifteen feet clearance above high water at $9,000, this estimate being based on the tenders of last OctolxV. A greater clearance would involve additional expense. A fifty-foot span with a fifteen- foot clearance would cost $7,600. It was pointed out by some of the aldermen that even with the new span, the bridge would not be safe for heavy traffic, as the old part is weak.
