PACIFIC COAST TO SEE REAL BUILDIjNG BOOM j It is becoming increasingly apparent that not only southern British Co-' jumbia but the entire Pacific Coast -as on the verge of a real building mboam: This is indicated in.an unmistakable manner by the rush of work "in the various architects' offices in jevery city and tqwn along the coast on lioth sides of the {'boundary line, Vancouver architects, it is already apparent, are getting their share.of small work so far and the big jobs will come -later just as surely-jas: ^sunrise and ■sunset. The same condition is report • ed from architects' ^offices practically •-all the way down the, coast. Seattle ,3s experiencing, much building activity, but like Vancouver,it is mostly ■'small jobs as yet. But the number -of these in itself indicates what may lie expected later ,when: building ma- sterial prices get more stabilized and :Sn.vestors get confidence enough . to -Start on large undertakings which "only await, this stabilization of prices. WEEK'S BUILDING TOTAL Last week was an exceptionally busy one at the city building inspector's office and the number of permits taken out reflects the increasing activity in the local; building trade. The 43 permits issued during the week had an aggregate value to ?80,9i0, and when it is considered that no single job in these 43 permits amounted to over $10,000, the amount of moderate sized building under way may be judged. City Building Inspector Bird expects an even busier time for the coming week, for among, the permits to be issued early in; the week—the plans having already been passed.—is a, $13,000 store building for Granville street, to be erected adjoining ,the Globe Theatre.; APPOINT COMMITTEE TO PREPARE MEMORIAL The first steps towards deciding on some suitable form of war memorial to be erected on Victory Square were taken at a meeting of the war memorial-" committee held in the city hall Friday afternoon. Representatives of about forty local public and semi- public bodies attended and fwidely divergent views were expressed and • many, suggestions made as to just what would be the most suitable form of memorial. The suggestions ranged all the way from a simple moun- ment to a huge memorial city hall and big auditorium that would cover the whole of Victory Square. It was finally decided to leave it to a committee of seven experts to be appoint FLOOR LAYERS 'and , Manufacturers B.C. Hardwood Floor Co. Limited 2635 Granville St. Ceperley, Rounsefell & Co. Not since.»the .year following the 'quake and great ■fee have San Francisco architects, as * "whole, been so busy, while^ the same ■applies to Los Angeles. Most of the prospective work in these two cities 'is of a. substantial nature, such as office buildings, theatres, warehouses .'•ad; apartments. In the latter class «f buildings especially Los Angeles is taking the lead, for the entire Pacific -coast, as the rush of tourist traffic to that city during the fall and winter ^months has rendered any sort of ac- :«ammodation at a premium. Residential work in these.California cities, too, shows no sign of a let-up. It '.seems to be no longer a question of .^i-prices but of delivery. A scarcity of ^wilding materials has already developed and with the demand greater than the supply, it is not surprising •that some of the dealers are unable^to 'guarantee immediate delivery. One of the naturally resultant effects of this unusual activity on the .part of architects is-* a scarcity of draughtsmen. The demand for ^draughtsmen in the American coast •cities is already much greater than tie supply. Coast architects are paying top notch wages, yet despite this fact good men are scarce. As might 'be expected the demand has attracted some incompetent men into the field "but their incompetency is not ,755—Clara R.
