HUGE JUMP IN SAVINGS DEPOSITS. An increase of thirty-one millions of dollars in savings deposits, after a recovery of nineteen millions of the previous month, is the notable feature of the January statement of the chartered banks of Canada. The increase goes a long way to prove that unemploymnet is not so extensive in the country as has been advertised. When the Victory Loan was placed in the market last year, first payments on that loan brought -savings deposits down sharply and the rapid recovery towards the end of.'the, year, the turning in December of a 137 million decrease to a 19 million increase went a long way to corroborate the popular impression that payments on the loan had been inainly made at the time of The decrease in current loans in December was changed to an increase of 4 millions in January, and circulation registered another important decrease. Call loans, botli abroad and at home, showed decreases and both total assets and. total liabilities continued on the down grade, although in both cases they are more than 300 millions above January figures for last year. The Cork-Province mine expects to produce marketable ore at the rate of 600 tons monthly when the operation of its mill is started on a three-shift basis, says a Kaslo report.. Half of the product will be lead-silver and the remainder zinc, according to a previous experience. Operation will be inaugurated in April and not great period is expected to elapse before the plant is running near capacity. The quantity 0f ore broken in preparation for milling operations is estimated at 2000 tons. Plans for important development were laid out by Manager W. E. Zwicky in the period of inactivity at the mine. They include an exploration of the Superior vein, which parallels a fissure from which ore having high silver values was shipped, the extension of, the drift In a northerly direction to reach a lime band where it is believed the usual ore replacement will be found, and an extension cf a whize on ore from the No. 4. level to a point 100 feet, therefrom. Make a note of this: PAINT AND DRUG REPORTER "These are quiet days in the paint trade. No one makes any attempt to disguise this fact. The reasons why this is the case stand out so plainly that there is no need of attempting to explain or analyze the situation. Tlie building operations in this country are about one-fourth of normal, and conditions are all against any one buying anything not needed for immediate consumption. The paint trade realizes that the situation is one that cannot be forced, and is waiting as philosophically as possible for better'days. The general opinion seems to be that the dullest period has been gone through; with, and that from now on there will be a stead}' improvement in conditions. It is pointed out that between now and the end of April no fewer than .84 large vessels are booked to arrive at Australian ports. Although the April bookings are not complete, no fewer than 700,000 tons jof overseas shipping is due to reach j Australian ports. In March it is calculated that there will be over fifty steamers, representing nearly 500,000 tons, in Sydney harbor. In addition there will be the steamers running in the ordinary Australian and New Zealand and the Pacific trade, together with many ships from the Pacific Coast of America. England is said to be making giant strides in procuring foodstuffs from Australia so as to reduce the high cost of living. Advices state that information reecived from the British government shows that a great fleet of merchant vessels is booked for Australian trade. ),';.... This $300 grant is in the nature of a gratuity from the government but the cost of the house must be repaid to the city on a five per cent, in- } terest basis extended over a suggested ! period of 20 years. ' It was also intimated by Hon. Mr. Pattullo that if Vancouver did not wish to accept the financial responsibility involved in the spending of the 5300,000, the money would be available for other municipalities ror better housing. The minister thought, j however that Vancouver should not hesitate on the responsibility of administering the fund, as Montreal, Toronto, Ottawa and other leading eastern cities had cheerfully accepted the responsibility on behalf of their returned soldier citizens. Commissioner Ireland reported also that to date 174 soldier applicants had registered to take advantage of the provisions of the bill. Of these 140 were eligible as residents of the city, the other 34 being ineligible through residence beyond the city boundaries. The Commission, after considerable debate on the problem, passed a re- eolution suggesting to the city-council that if the financial responsibility for the carrying out of the housing scheme is to be "placed upon the 'city, the ratepayers should have an oppor-| tunity to pass upon the measure before We have a full imichinu shop equipment, lathes, drill presses, milling machine, taps and dies, emery stands, etc. 1—SxS Air Compressor, 40 H.P.
