Stocks of iron at the furnaces have increased in the- month about 35 per cent, on the average. Considering the light demand for pig iron, prices have been well maintained. The general agitation of price reduction has cut- the volume of new' business 10 to 15 per cent., but the' mills of the country, taking into account a few which have shut down, are averaging about 60 to G5 per cent, of capacity. Shading of prices remains an undercurrent, but it is not sufficiently., strong to establish new market values in .'the major commodities., , The demand for a revision of freight rates in the ore regions, including the- remission of charges not formerly made by the ore carriers, shows one way in which pig iron costs and prices may be reduced.
