Many of the injustices of our social system are .about to be brought before the court of public opinion. One of the first to be remedied will be the matter of housing. Industrial housing in Canada is making a rapid start. British Columbia, like practically- all the other provinces of the Dominion, is wrests j ing with the problem, but so'far has made little more than academic progress. In other parts of Canada, however, there are. some notable, examples —worked out under the stress of economic need and industrial necessity— hooves close co-operation and immediate action by both the provincial government and the various municipalities and their subsidary housing commissions to get the preliminary "red tape" unwound as soon as possible and get down to business that will produce real results. The Cork-Province mine, near Kaslo, has arranged for a loan of - $20,000, of which $12,000 is to be used for the cancellation of an indebtedness and $8,000 for a working capital, says a of the advantages that may be se-1 Nelson report. V Iron Age Says: February's production of pig iron was 2,9-.0,16S tons, or L05'tP.Q6vtQns .Per4.day^ ^T^isjs, J5^9.JLons' less than the daily output of January. On March 1 there were 306 furnaces in blast, making iron at a'rate of 101,475 tons daily, against 333 fur-- naces on February 1, operating at. 104,405 'jtons. Stocks of iron at the furnaces have increased in the- month about 35 per cent, on the average. Considering the light demand for pig iron, prices have been well maintained. The general agitation of price reduction has cut- the volume of new' business 10 to 15 per cent., but the' mills of the country, taking into account a few which have shut down, are averaging about 60 to G5 per cent, of capacity. Shading of prices remains an undercurrent, but it is not sufficiently., strong to establish new market values in .'the major commodities., , The demand for a revision of freight rates in the ore regions, including the- remission of charges not formerly made by the ore carriers, shows one way in which pig iron costs and prices may be reduced.
