J. Coughlan & Sons of the contract for the erection of a $3,750,000 drydock »ere, it is becoming increasingly evident that the aggregate value of the amount of construction work which is to be started in this year of peace, 1920, is going to jump at once into the class of almftst the busiest of the oft- Teferred-to pre-war boom days. Back an 1910-12 when the year's building permits took a jump from five-to nearly ten millions in a single year, sta- ticians in the building trade marvelled and predicted it would not last. But the building permits kept on climbing at the rate of some two millions a year for several years until in 1913 the peak of building activity in the city was recorded with an aggregate of 117,000,000 worth of bunding authorized for the year. ~ '--: .' For there is every assurance, Irom work already in sight that the current year will witness a g'ump in luilding permits from about two and a quarter, millions recorded in 1919 to well over the ten million dollar mark for 1920: Just prior to the advent of the New Tear, City Building Inspector Bird estimated that the current year's building would reach the four million mark, a very conservative estimate indeed. His estimate was based naturally on -what building projects were in sight then. But that estimate is far out of date now with approximately $9,550,000 in new construction work in sight'— and that not counting the hundreds of dwellings, stores, factories and business blocks which may easily swell this total another couple of millions. Here are a few of the items that go to make up the $9,550,000 total already in sight; Coughlan drydock/ $3,750, -000; new C. P.' II. piers, $2,000,000; new Dominion government wharves, $1,500,000; Spencer's department.store, $1,000,000; Woodward's department store addition, $500,000; Regal Theatre, $500,000; Allen Theatre, $300,000.
