All forecasts be eminent authorities on .the state of business during the " .next lew years, the building business particularly, are practically unanimous and confident of but a single experience—the building business must - boom, as the urgent need of new construction is so great that nothing can Btop it. The question -of prices has -always. been one of serious moment, . '"especially the Question of high prices; yet it is accepted by nearly everyone in a position to know, that high prices •will prevail and that the recession •will be but gradual and will not com- -mence for a few years. This is/ bei . c&nse. .the economic- factors which make • and control prices are clearly .--defined in this situation and are im- •jnorable except by gradual change. •'"'',' On the other hand, it is pointed out that a tranquil prosperity is not so certain, and the debatable ground on this point is found in the region of labor sentiment. Will the men in " Irasy and abundant times work with amy zeal and contentment, or will >constant labor agitation and unrest '•seriously embarrass the trend of pros- „ .perity? This is the question and practically, the only one left, for high prices will not deter building, because 'the construction in many cases, must T>e had at any cost. v It bas been suggested that the co- ' operation and good-will of the journey- -tnen might be won by granting them, Sn -modified form, a share in business Tsrofits, in a manner that would assist lousiness itself. The idea is that the men be granted* a salesman's status So the extent that they be encouraged , ix> push the sales of whatever lines of building material or supplies that they are connected with. Thus a journey- .man plumber would be encouraged to push the sales of plumbing equipment at every opportunity when in touch -with the customer, particularly right -on the job and in the form of"extras." The suggestion appears to have "merit; so much merit in fact, that it has already been adopted to a certain •extent by some leading firms. Certainly, if it worked well in_ practice, it would mean increased business fpr the -employer and added income for the worker. If a journeyman is sent to a dwelling say, to install a new bathroom, and performs his work with aeatness, despatch and good workmanship, so that he wins to a certain degree the respect and confidence of 4he "house owner, and if the journeyman then elicits from the' owner an -•order for a new set of wash trays, or . , , ^ MAY PUT IN BULKHEAD ON GEORGIA STREET, EAST City Engineer Fellowes has under consideration a plan for the bulkhead- ing of a portion of Georgia street, east between Raymur and Campbell Avenues; in order to provide' a better grade over that portion of the street where it crosses the gully there. There were really'two plans under considerations, one of which, however, made no provision for "railway development of the possibility of it being necessary in a few days to have a viaduct there the same as on Hastings street east. In view of the railway development that is fully expected will take* place there following the erection of the new Bal- lantyne Pier and. the resultant connecting up of the Canadian National Railway Terminals on False Creek with the new government wharf and elevator, the city engineer has been requested by the civic board of works to report on .the safety, of the bulk- heading plan. The report is to be submitted "to the next meeting of the civic beard of works. The engineer estimates that the necessary fillihg'and rocking together with the building of a'"T)ulkhead to maintain approximately the present grade of the B. C. E. R. tracks will cost about $5,000. ■ SOUTH VANCOUVER PERMITS ■-■■SS7S—A. Kirkhicker,' 288 45th Ave. E., alterations, $100. 3S79—O. Dumont, 21st . TI,S NOT A LONG WAY TO .THIS NEW TIPPERARY Reflecting much artistic skill in construction and design is the quaint and picturesque rustic tea gardens and pergola recently completed hear the summit of the Capilano Canyon, close to-the Capilano hotel, by Mr. Charles Anderson, and which was recently opened under the. appropriate .title, of the Tipperary Tea Gardens. Situated at a strategic point where all the scenic beauty of the world-famed canyon can be seen, to ihe best advantage, the new tea gardens affords an added attraction to the ever-increasing throng of tourists who visit that locality and fills the proverbial longfelt want for some place where tourists might rest and partake of- refreshments while feasting their eyes on the glorious panorama of mountain and valley. The design of the little pergola and refreshment stand has been carried out entirely in rustic, and shows what the raw product of the B. C. forest is ■ capable of when used so artistically. The place has been much admired by visitors and tourists to the Capilano Canyon, nearly all of whom have warmly complimented Mr. Anderson for his artistic talents as shown in the workmanship of the pergola, as well as his-progressiveness in opening up such a place there.
