Ttfany enquiries are made' respect-. ang the durability of various types and sjiecies of. wood 'for building, purposes,' mod tbe answer has generally been made that lumber used for dwellings ■will last indefinitely if well painted. Striking illustrations of th'e truth of $hi8 statement are afforded by the ex- iceUent condition of those century-old 'Colonial dwellings in eastern Canada "irfcich have been properly cared for. Such structures are quite common In •some of the eastern provinces and there are also many dwellings of con- 'BMlerably more than a century'in age in New England, to whose' shores in .the early sixteenth century came many -of the most skilled woodworkers, decorators and other artizans of the mother country. Since many kinds of lum- Iber are represented in these structur- <«s, the durability of painted wood is ^well shown by observing their condition. 'Many claims are now made tor the, durability of particular, types of wood, isuch as British Columbia fir and cypress, and California-redwood. Some enthusiastic producers have even stat- -ed that their woadsj' need no paint. "While it is unTv'ersaily "recognized 'that there are many samples of the longevity of these and other species of "woods, people would certainly' look askance, at the dwelling that.was'ieft unpamted. \ 'AJtfb^-' The modern desire for -community '^betterment demands, aesthetic sur; "xoundings and properly decorated homes. As a matter of fact, however. '•any type" of wood that "is left uhpainted ~w»U soon become eroded .by the weather, spotted with fungus growth and -made unnecessarily heavy by the •ilarge quantities of moisture that Would !be absorbed, especially in the* coast -climate. Any species of unpainted 'wood will soon darken, warp and be- icome fuzzy and damp. Paint, on the other hand, acts as a wood preservative because it closes the openings in the wood, preventing the entrance of Jdecay producing organisms. Thor- •oughly seasoned wood will last indefln- - itely if kept well painted. The particular locality in which '•.structures are built often has a bearing upon the type of lumber selected, -and while it is true that the painting of each type of wood demands the .upecial consideration of the painter, it has been found that'a high grade -paint is well suited for the preserva- •tion of every kind of wood, provided the paint is properly treated In the hands of an intelligent workman who «an produce lasting results on almost ;e*ery type and In every climate. VICTORIA—Fast taking shape on the old Songliees Indian reserve at Hospital Point, near the end of the Johnson street viaduct, is the fine new $250,000 plant of the Sidney Roofing & Paper Company, Limited, which besides making another notable addition to the industries of the city, will also fill the dual purpose of providing a much-needed adjunct to the list of manufacturing plants for the building trade as well as utilizing in its output raw materials and waste products indigenous to the province which hitherto have had to he imported from the east. For nearly a decade now the Sidney Roofing & Paper Company have been bringing raw material for the manufacture of i-oofing felt and building paper from eastern Canada, but with the completion of this new quarter-million dollar plant soon, the majority of this material will be secured in British Columbia and utilized. Not only will this new plant mean a boon to the building trade and a big boost to the weekly payroll of the city, but it bids fair to create several new minor industries and side lines on a considerable scale in the collection of the raw materials which have hitherto been dealt with mainly as waste and a general nuisance to be, got rid ot regard- 1-yss of their commercial value. Few industrial plants anywhere will have such ai*,. admirable locatioa »nd such ideal shipping facilities as those possessed by this new industry. In front, deep water wharfage; in the rear rail corinection with two such im: portant transcontinental lines as ..,the C.P.R. and the Canadian National Railways system. In fact, ample shipping facilities in order to.give tlie best possible service to customers is a feature of both this new plant and the company's other well established p:ant at Sidney, B. C. Together, the two plants, have an area of nine acres. There: is 950 feet of waterfrontage at this new Victoria plant while the Sidney plant possesses 1200 feet of waterfront. . :: . The size of the factory, buildings whidh are now approaching completion impresses one with the magnitude of the operations which will be carried on when the plant is in -operation, which is expected to be about the first of August. The buildings are all of heavy mill construction covered with corrugated iron, thereby reducing the fire risk to a minimum. Some of the machinery for the plant is already on the ground while the rest is now *6ir the way from the east and is expected to arrive soon. Construction of the main buildings is now being rushed, with a view to having them ready to house all of the machinery Just' as soon as it arrives. The largest single building of the plant facture of the building paper and feltjj||j will be carried on. It will be 50 by 270 feet in size and house the machinery necessary for this process. Near by will be the saturating room, a structure 50 by 180 feet in ar*Ta, while adjacent is also the rag storage warehouse which covering an area, of 60 by 100 feet, will provide ample storage facilities for accumulating a large stock of this necessary material. A beater room, 70 by. 100 feet in size, also gives one an ideia of the magnitude of the operations. A prepared stock warehouse, 50 by 135 feet, will provide storage, for the semi-finished material. A short distance away is the boiler, house, 35 by 60 feet in size, where there is being installed 'a battery of boilers that will generate 300 horsepower for the operation of the machinery besides furnishing steam tor drying "purposes—an important adjunct of the manufacturing processes. An office building 20 by 40 will also be erected for the administrative staff. Manager R. "VV. Mayhew announces that the capacity of the plant will be 20 tons per day of, building paper, and 12 tons per day of roofing felt. But to secure this output a truly enormous amount of waste paper and., rags will have to be<5 collected throughout the lower mainland and forwarded to this plant to feed the insatiable maw of the machines that turn out these building supplies so much in demand. It is estimated that the, 'plant.' will need 4,000 tons of waste paper per year— and a ton of waste paper is a whole lot. There will also be required 1500 tons of rags per. year, and in case the full quantity required cannot be obtained in British Columbia, they -will have to be imported from the prairie, provinces or the east. This Is what had to, be done in the past to suply the company's other plant at Sidney. The company has about l.OOtf tons of raw material on hand already and is constantly accumulating this stock of; rags and waste paper so as to be; fh a position to run continuously when once the plant is started. > The markets for the finished product are prac- tially unlimited. Right now the company is about six months behind on accumulated, standing orders from New Zealand, Australia, and even some from China. They expect to make some big shipments to China when the~plant is in operation. This new Victoria plant will also be used "to prepare raw material for'the Sidney plant, thereby greatly facilitat-, ing the aggregate output of both plants. The company is now booking orders for fall delivery and uthe advantage of quick delivery ^should es- specially appeal to builders who in the past have experienced many delays LOW COST TON MILE delivered to Garford users in every industry, includes all that can be said about truck economy and truck efficiency. .'•..■-, °' * .
