ANOTHER PLAN FOR CLOVERDALE SCHOOL School Board Still Hopes to Make a Start with Permanent Scheme VICTORIA.—Owing to the development in the Saanich Council with regard to the Cloverdale School, the School Board met on .Monday evening and renewed their request for a grant, though naturally in a modified form. Instead of asking for an extraordinary estimate of $10,400, the board requested the Saanich Works Committee last evening for an amount equivalent 'to the per capita cost of educating the children in city/schools, with which to build the first instalment of the proposed new school. It was estimated that this sum, plus surplus funds saved elsewhere, and a Government grant, would enable the board to make a start with the new school, by building two rooms at'once on the site. The sum requested as the council's contribution was about $2,500. SEATTLE—State Highway Commissioner James Allen states that while the rising cost of materials and the difficulty experienced in obtaining same has considerably hindered road construction throughout the state, road j construction work is progressing very' satisfactorily. 11 any road building projects are being planned, and it is expected that Federal aid will be received on some of these when the approval of the plans by Government engineers has been obtained. CHIEF PITT HAS NEW METHOD OF THAWING HYDRANTS A fire in the winter time with the fire hydrants all frozen would .certainly be a misfortune; consequently it is up to the fire departments to keep the hydrants open. One method is by a small pump, but it is slow and laborious. ' Chief Pitt, of the Middletown, Conn., department, has a new method that he says £b; great. He connects a two-inch pipe to the exhaust-of their Federal combination, tti.enjeduces-.this down to. 3-4 inch, connecting .this ,to the hydrant with a piece of hose. He starts the motor and does the job in a hurry. They kept 20 hydrants thawed out with no trouble. Just another use to which dependable Federate can be put. H. J. Tucker, 833 Pender St. West, distributes the Federal trucks locally. AUTOMOBILE RECORDS FROM JUNE 1 TO JUNE* 13.
