LIMITED CINDER CONCRETE / STANDS HARD TESTS It is claimed by those who favor the more general and extensive use of cinder concrete that as it has proved it- ' self capable of successfully supporting great weights and withstanding unusual strain and stress when used in -floors, there are no valid reasons why the same material cannot satisfactorily replace other and heavier materials used in wall construction. : The advantages 'of cinder concrete.1 construction, it is said, will be many, chief among them being a great saving in dead load in the walls of buildings, thereby affecting a great saving in the cost of steel structures. A plan which has been proposed, and which may be tried on a projected building in this city before long, contemplates pouring the concrete floor and walls of the story; immediately beneath, as one operation. It is pi-oposed to' weather proof the walls with a" coat of gunite, after the method used by the cement gun companies' on a great number; of important structures throughout Canada and the United tates. The use of this material will result in thoroughly sealing up every void, in the concrete and allow any finish that the architect may desire. V Cinder concrete is no longer in the experimental stage. Its fireproof and weight-carrying capacity are no longer questionew. Cinder concrete walls of a test house erected at the Columbia University testing station, in Brooklyn, have stood an experiment lasting over forty hours, divided into four-hour per- iods, during which they were subjected to heat 1,700 degrees Fahrenheit, followed by an immediate application of cold water from a'high pressure main. These walls were constructed by two Columbia undergraduates during their vacation and the tests were conducted under the direction of Ira H. Wilson, engineer of the National Board of-Fire Underwriters, and Prof. James H. McGregor of Columbia University. These walls are believed to' have stood,»a greater fire and water stress than any walls ever tested, '. ■ ■ ■ * ■ i Cinder concrete has the advantage of being much cheaper than other forms of concrete and vast quaiuities of its component parts have been daily going to waste in the past when its use was chiefly restricted to sidewalk construction. In recent years, however, cinder concrete floors have been used in hundreds of important buildings with complete satisfaction. (condition. Most of the stock in company is held in Rossland. A steadily increasing pile, of zinc concentrates, is piling up at the Rose- bery plant of the Rosebury-Surprise Mining company in the Slocan, due" to the fact that things are at present not favorable for .the profitable marketing of a zinc product. MINING The outlook in Sandon for the season is regarded as being very favorable. With the going of the snow, activity is, increasing in all directions and' many inquiries are being received from outside points with regard to mining prospects and properties. The tramway of the Wonderful mine, near Sandon, is in shape and was given its initial tryout last week. It is about half a mile in length and has one span of over a thousand feet in length without a tower, probably one of the longest spans in the dis-j trict. Several copper claims have been located 35 miles northeast of'Lac !a Hache; also at the head of Gun, creek. A < branch railway may be built from the P. G. E. The "Iron Trade Review" says: "Better business is appearing in all quarters of the iron and steel market, clearly marketing a rebound in confl- j dence after the weeks of passive waiting induced by the Washington price wrangle. Buyers apparently are bringing themselves more nearly to a ccn- j viction that no great concessions from | present price levels may be expected under prevailing conditions. There.is more disposition to accept the situation at its face value and to plan for the future. While business still is of a spotty character, the stronger senti- ment applies to all lines and where orders have not yet appeared in more liberal volume prospects have'improv- jed. The situation compares favorably with the moderately broadening mar- iket that ruled before the government [price plan was brought forward.
