STRIKE CAUSING ENORMOUS LOSS. No matter whether the thousands of men now on ' strike in this and other cities of Western Canada, win their objective and establish the right to collective bargaining and secure the reinstatement of the striking postal employees of Winnipeg, there is, one thing they can never regain. That is the aggregate amount of wages they have already lost since,-,'the strike'was declared: Just /what these lost wages already amount to in western Canada it is difficult to estimate- with exactitude, but they run into a prodigious sum, as may be imagined when it has been announced from Winnipeg that the pay roll lost to the men out-on strike as well as others in.enforced idleness in the prairie capital lias, already amounted to nearly $6,000,000 for the four weeks the strike has already lasted. In Vancouver, it is estimated that the wage loss has already reached over '$1,000,000. More appalling still is the loss to the construction and building trades, especially in this city and Winnipeg, ■which prior to the "strike, had bid fair to experience a real revival in building operations. The strike came just at a time whenbuHding activity was gettting nicelyv;.jntb its stride. It PEARSON WIRE & IRON WOBtKS ORNAMENTAL IRON - WORKERS, WIRE WORK- ERS and WEAVERS Nothing* too Large or too Small If it's Iron or Wire we make it CITY MARKET BUILDING Phone your Inquiries to FAIRMONT 2794 ing operations will be practically lost for this year anyway. For in the case of many of the large building jobs which were planned in Winnipeg, construction should have been well under way by now in order to have them roofed and in a position to put the inside finishing touches to during the winter. The season has now advanced so far that ,it would be impossible to have construction advanced to a practical and profitable stage before the snowfall, and these building jobs will, perforce, have to stand over until next spring, meaning, therefore, a dead loss of many millions in wages to the very men who are idling and talking of the questionable advantages of the communist and soviet form of government. Here in Vancouver, a largely similar state of affairs prevails. It 'is estimated that with the Soldiers' housing scheme, new docks, warehouses, bank and office buildings planned to be commenced this spring and summer, there, would have been fully '$10^000,000 to $15,000,000 worth of building construction under way in another couple of -months. Some of the big jobs,, such as the projected new Union Bank building at the corner of Seymourrand Hastings street, have already been called off by the builders as a direct result of the strike. Contracts in many other instances have also been cancelled, or will be cancelled if the strike is not settled by the end of this week. Already .the provincial government has recalled its bids for tenders for the construction of new homes for soldiers in South Vancouver, and New Westminster, which was about ready to make a start on $60,000 worth of new homes, has deferred action. The Vancouver city council does not intend to push matters in connection with the civic housing scheme for returned soldiers until labor conditions are restored to normal again. All this loss Is beings occasioned to Vancouver, Calgary, Edmonton, Pernie and other western towns and cities just because a bunch of rad ical labor leaders in Winnipeg, having failed in their efforts to establish Bolshevism in Seattle and spread it throughout the United.' States, are now making a more determined effort to establish their cult in the Dominion with Winnipeg as tho central point. ' J. Hanbury & Co.
